Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said that Andrelton Simmons experienced a "really big improvement" with his sprained right thumb from Sunday to Monday.

Dr. Gary Laurie still needs to read the results of Simmons' MRI before more is known on his status, but it's sounding like the shortstop has a shot to avoid the disabled list. Simmons suffered the injury after trying to make a diving catch during Saturday's game.

Freddie Freeman was pulled from Monday's game versus the Giants with a right oblique strain.

Well, at least he didn't aggravate his wright injury. The Braves are calling Freeman day-to-day for the time being, but, as we all know, oblique injuries usually wind up leading to stints on the disabled list. Chris Johnson would be poised to take over at first base if Freeman misses significant time.
Aug 3 - 9:13 PM

Stephen Strasburg (oblique) yielded two runs while striking out 11 over 5 2/3 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

Strasburg gave up five hits and didn't walk anyone. The terrific showing should cinch his return to the Nationals' rotation this weekend at home against the Rockies. He's missed the last month with a strained left oblique.

Freddie Freeman left Monday's game against the Giants with an undisclosed injury.

He didn't suffer an obvious injury but was replaced at first base by Chris Johnson in the top of the fifth inning. The worry has to be that Freeman re-injured his right wrist, but the Braves should offer more on his status later Monday.
Aug 3 - 8:39 PM

Matt Joyce (concussion) went through a workout on Monday.

Although he's been symptom-free for a few days, this is the first on-field workout Joyce has gone through since he went on the 7-day concussion disabled list. He should be ready to be activated soon, but the Angels might designate him for assignment.
Aug 3 - 8:01 PM

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Jason Kipnis (shoulder) is expected to be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.

Kipnis tried to battle through a sore right shoulder for a few days, but the Indians finally placed him on the disabled list Monday. He doesn't have any structural damage, but it's an ailment that's bothered Kipnis off and on for a good chunk of the season. Mike Aviles is likely to receive the bulk of the playing time at second base while Kipnis is out.
Aug 3 - 7:46 PM

Chris Tillman (ankle) threw on flat ground from 90 feet Monday and is hoping to throw a bullpen session Wednesday.

Tillman had to be scratched from Monday's scheduled start due to a sprained right ankle, but he should be ready to rejoin the rotation later this week. The right-hander has been on a roll of late with a 1.09 ERA over his last six starts.
Aug 3 - 7:21 PM

Brian Johnson will be placed on Triple-A Pawtucket's disabled list due to left elbow tightness.

Johnson has been mentioned as a possibility to take Joe Kelly's spot in the rotation later this week, but obviously that won't happen now. He'll be re-evaluated later Monday or Tuesday before more is known about a potential timetable.
