The Promise of Youth
A few older closers are still making it work, but the promise of youth is too much to ignore, in your pens, and in your lineups. This is Saves & Steal...

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Kole Calhoun will miss 4-6 weeks with a bad ligament sprain.

It's a tough blow to the Angels and fantasy owners, as Calhoun was really turning it on before the injury. Calhoun had seven hits in his last 15 at-bats prior to rolling his ankle late in Wednesday's game. The Angels will rely on Collin Cowgill and Brennan Boesch in right field for the time being, but the team may take a look at external options now that Calhoun will miss significant time.

Bruce Chen has been scratched from his scheduled start Thursday due to a tight left glute muscle.

Chen said he's been dealing with the tweaked glute for about a week, which might explain the Twins getting to him for six runs in 3 2/3 innings his last time out. James Shields' start was bumped up to Thursday to accommodate, and the hope is that Chen will be ready to start Saturday's game -- a rematch with those Twins -- instead.

Jose Valverde allowed two solo home runs in a non-save situation during Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Called on to protect a five-run lead, the closer promptly served up back-to-back jacks to Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt before escaping without further damage. The idea that he wasn't sharp because it wasn't a save situation might apply under different circumstances, but Valverde was beat up by the Angels his last time out as well. This carriage might be quickly turning back into a pumpkin.
Apr 16 - 7:20 PM

Eric Young went 1-for-4 while stealing two more bases in Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Young has been a thief on the basepaths to start the year, as he's now got nine steals without being caught. That mark is good for second in the National League. He also scored his league-leading 12th run in the game. There's no reason he shouldn't be in an everyday fantasy player right now.
Apr 16 - 7:14 PM

Martin Prado went 3-for-4 in Wednesday's loss to the Mets.

Prado had just two hits in his previous 20 at-bats coming into the game. The third baseman didn't cross the plate, as the scuffling Diamondbacks' offense registered only two solo home runs on the day, but he's still scored 10 runs through the team's first 18 games.
Apr 16 - 7:06 PM

Anthony Recker went 2-for-4 with his second home run of the season in Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks.

In for Travis d'Arnaud, Recker made the most of his spot start. He took Brandon McCarthy deep for a solo home run to start the scoring, and he later added a double off the right-hander. He's got two homers and four RBI through 14 at-bats to start the year.
Apr 16 - 7:03 PM

Chase Headley is not in the Padres' lineup Wednesday due to a right biceps strain.

It's being called a mild strain, and the third baseman is day-to-day. It's unclear when he sustained the injury. First baseman Yonder Alonso was taking ground balls at third during batting practice before Wednesday's game, so he may see some time at the hot corner in a pinch if Headley misses any more time.
Apr 16 - 6:58 PM

Brandon McCarthy allowed three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mets on Wednesday.

At least McCarthy kept the opposition under five runs this time. The right-hander is now 0-3 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through four starts, an extension of his team's struggles to start the year. Maybe his fortune will turn Tuesday when the Diamondbacks visit the Cubs.
