A.J. Schugel (shoulder) worked two scoreless innings in his latest rehab appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Schugel has a 3.86 ERA in 4 2/3 rehab innings between High-A Bradenton and Triple-A Indy. The 28-year-old right-hander could join the Pirates' bullpen soon.

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) threw about 35 pitches over two innings in a simulated appearance on Wednesday.

Musgrove used all of his pitches and tried to ramp up the velocity on his fastball from previous throwing workouts. "It went really well. It was really encouraging," Musgrove said. "I didn't feel like there was any abnormality in the way I was moving and the things I was doing. The ball was coming out clean. The velo was in a decent range, kind of where I was expecting it to be." The 25-year-old right-hander could soon be cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment. He's on track to join the Pirates' rotation around mid-May, assuming no setbacks.

Twins designated RHP Tyler Kinley for assignment.

Kinley, a Rule 5 Draft pick from the Marlins in December, had allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and four walks through 3 1/3 innings this season out of the Minnesota bullpen. He could wind up back in Miami.

Twins recalled RHP Aaron Slegers from Triple-A Rochester.

Slegers was sporting an impressive 2.00 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 10/1 K/BB ratio through 18 innings (three starts) this season at the Triple-A level. The 25-year-old right-hander will presumably work in long relief initially, but he could eventually see some starts with Minnesota.

Tigers optioned OF Mike Gerber to Triple-A Toledo.

Gerber is 0-for-2 with a strikeout in his two short stints at the major league level this season. Detroit will likely call up a relief pitcher ahead of Thursday afternoon's series finale against the Pirates.

Tommy Pham (head) told Cardinals manager Mike Matheny late Wednesday that he thinks he can play Thursday.

Pham suffered a laceration on his forehead Wednesday when his bat snapped off a resistance band while he was in the indoor batting cage getting ready for his second plate appearance of the night. He told reporters that "blood started gushing down" from his head and covered his "whole jersey," but the 30-year-old outfielder passed an initial round of concussion tests and apparently escaped the frightening incident with nothing more than a big welt. "Let’s see how many ladies still like me," he said. "I’m not happy about it."
Apr 26 - 8:53 AM

Orlando Arcia (ankle, flu) went 0-for-4 in his return to the Brewers' lineup Wednesday.

Arcia hadn't appeared in a game since last Friday because of a right ankle sprain and then a minor stomach bug. The 23-year-old shortstop is batting just .205/.237/.301 through 76 plate appearances this season, but he certainly has the talent to turn things up a notch moving forward.
Apr 26 - 8:43 AM

Kyle Barraclough was away from the Marlins on Wednesday night due to a death in the family.

Barraclough has not officially been placed on the bereavement list, but that might happen before Friday's series opener against the Rockies. Drew Steckenrider and Tayron Guerrero were also unavailable on Wednesday, but the Marlins still managed to beat Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers.
