Alex Avila (back) will resume baseball activities on Sunday.

Avila was sidelined a couple days with tightness in his back, but it was never considered worrisome. "Feels better," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of Avila.

Derek Holland was scratched from an appearance in Sunday's intrasquad game due to "normal spring soreness" in his left shoulder, according to Rangers general manager Jon Daniels.

"No alarm bells," Daniels added. Holland is simply expected to throw on Monday instead, so it does appear that there's nothing to worry about here. The left-hander is a nice bounce-back candidate this season after being limited to just 37 innings in 2014 as he worked his way back from knee surgery.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Cuban infielder Hector Olivera has taken a physical for a number of teams.

Rosenthal lists the Dodgers among those clubs. Olivera has yet to be declared a free agent by Major League Baseball, but teams want to be prepared once that happens. MLB Network's Peter Gammons reported last month that five teams are willing to bid over $70 million for Olivera.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Saturday that Chris Owings (shoulder) is progressing ahead of schedule.

Owings had been slated to miss the first 8-10 Cactus League games as he works his way back from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, but it sounds like he could be ready sooner than that. "I don't have an exact (return) date," Hale said, "but he's past where I thought he was." Owings has bounce-back potential as a fantasy option if he's able to stay healthy.
Mar 1 - 9:19 AM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Saturday that Yasmany Tomas will see some playing time in the outfield during Cactus League play.

The D'Backs want Tomas to handle third base well enough to start there, but they'll give him reps in the outfield just in case. "We have to prioritize who gets all these at-bats in spring training," Hale said. "He's one we want to get a lot of at-bats to get a good (look) at his offense, too." Jake Lamb will be in line to start at third base if Arizona ends up having to put Tomas in left field.

Jeremy Hellickson cut a pitching session short Saturday with a cramp in his right rib cage area.

"I feel fine. It's more of a cramp than anything. It was a precautionary thing to shut it down," Hellickson said. "It doesn't even hurt right now. We did a bunch of tests and nothing bothered it. We'll just treat it a little bit and I'll be fine tomorrow." It doesn't appear to be anything worrisome, but he'll be re-evaluated Sunday.

Sean Doolittle was encouraged by strength tests on his left shoulder Saturday.

Doolittle still isn't cleared to begin throwing, but the encouraging results could open the door for him to start throwing in the next week or two. The southpaw likely won't be ready for the start of the season, but assuming things continue to progress he should be ready to return sometime in April. Until then, Tyler Clippard will likely serve as the Athletics' closer.

Blue Jays signed OF Dayan Viciedo to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The deal will pay Viciedo $2.5 million if he makes the team out of spring. Viciedo can be a useful player against left-handed pitching, but his days as a viable everyday starting outfielder have gone. Viciedo hit 21 homers last season, so at the very least he can provide some additional pop for the Jays.
