Browns CB Justin Gilbert suffered a concussion in Friday's preseason game.

Gilbert was having a solid preseason before going down, posting four tackles and two pass breakups over the last two games. The injury is a setback, but he should still make the final roster. With K’Waun Williams sidelined, Gilbert could open the season as the No. 4 corner.

Alex Smith completed 20-of-30 passes for 181 yards and rushed twice for 25 yards Saturday against the Bears.

Smith was surgical against Chicago, meticulously moving the ball down the field and routinely converting third downs. He did not take many shots downfield, but that did not stop the Chiefs from piling up yards in the first half. Smith finishes the preseason 32-of-46 for 354 yards and a touchdown. Although his legs make him interesting, Smith does not have the fantasy upside to be a real option in standard leagues.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport's "understanding" is that Tony Romo (back) would return "by midseason" in a "best-case scenario."

For whatever it's worth, RapSheet adds Romo "broke a different bone" in his back "than last time," when Romo suffered a fracture in 2014. Whenever Romo is deemed ready to play, RapSheet says he will likely need pre-game epidurals. The timeline being thrown around by most reporters is 6-to-10 weeks, though six weeks is obviously on the optimistic side. The Cowboys will open the season playing slow-paced, run-first football with two rookies in the backfield (Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott) and a talent-deficient defense. Romo should be scratched off of fantasy-draft cheatsheets.

Dak Prescott is expected to open the year as the Cowboys' starter.

With Tony Romo (back) out 6-10 weeks, Prescott should start at least the first month. Prescott has blown up the preseason, throwing for 454 yards and a 5:0 TD/INT ratio through three games. He's obviously a good bet to regress against more complex schemes, but his rushing ability gives him some early-season value. Prescott is worth a late-round flyer.

Profootballtalk.com reports the Cowboys anticipate Tony Romo (back) missing 6-10 weeks.

Citing a source with knowledge of the situation, PFT's Mike Florio reports Romo would "in a best case scenario" return in Week 5 against the Bengals. So rookie Dak Prescott is set up to make at least four starts, if not more depending on the pace of 36-year-old Romo's recovery. Although Prescott has played well this preseason, losing Romo is a touchdown-projection blow to the rest of Dallas' skill-position players, including Dez Bryant and Ezekiel Elliott. At least in the case of Elliott, he should be saddled up for a mammoth workload.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett revealed Saturday that Tony Romo has a broken bone in his back.

The broken bone was revealed on an MRI. Garrett insists the injury "isn't related" to any of Romo's previous back injuries. (He's undergone two career surgeries on his back.) Garrett provided no timetable for Romo to return and "stressed that his situation is day by day." Garrett compared Romo's latest back injury to an injury he played through in 2014, when Romo made it through 15 starts but was severely hobbled at times. Garrett added that he's "heard a whole range of possibilities about when Romo could return," but "none of those possibilities include being out all year." Preseason star Dak Prescott will almost certainly be the Cowboys' starter in Week 1 against the Giants, and quite possibly beyond.

Colin Kaepernick's $11.9 million base salary became guaranteed when he was kept on the 49ers' roster through April 1.

The 49ers also paid Kaepernick a $400,000 offseason workout bonus. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn has made a convincing case on Twitter that Kaepernick's release may be inevitable, but it would be a costly move for the 49ers. Dysfunction has reached new heights in San Francisco.

Bears CB Tracy Porter exited the third preseason game with a possible concussion.

He took a knee to the back of the head from a teammate late in the second quarter. He stayed down on the turf for several minutes before being escorted to the locker room. With Kyle Fuller out with a knee injury, the Bears are very thin at corner.
