Robbie Ray struck out 10 batters against only one walk, but was charged with six runs -- three earned -- in his five innings of work during a loss to the Reds on Saturday.

Ray had great stuff tonight but was victimized by a Jake Lamb three-run error and a Jay Bruce three-run bomb. Ray has a fantastic 132 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings. His ability to whiff batters has not translated to run prevention so far this year. He will take his 5-9 record and 4.53 ERA into a start in Milwaukee on Thursday.

Matt Adams homered in his second straight game in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers.

What must have seemed like just a few hours after his 16th-inning heroics Friday night, Adams hit a solo shot off Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda in the fifth inning to get the Cardinals on the board. The home run was his 12th of the year. Adams is hitting .261/.308/.486 with 41 RBI on the year.

Joey Votto stayed hot on Saturday, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Votto got off to a very slow start this season, but has been back to his usual stellar self for a good while now. For the season he is slashing .275/.410/.484 and that line is likely to continue its steady climb down the stretch. He has 17 home runs, 58 runs, 50 RBI and seven stolen bases.

Chris Owings went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in his first game back from the disabled list on Saturday.

The stolen base is a good sign that the foot injury that kept him on the DL for six weeks is a thing of the past. He doesn't have much power, so his .284 batting average and his nine stolen bases are the only stats keeping him on the fringe of fantasy usefulness.
Jul 23 - 11:01 PM

Oswaldo Arcia suffered a mild right elbow strain on Saturday night against the Athletics.

Arcia was in obvious pain after a hard swing in the top of the seventh inning. He was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game and is batting .230/.306/.395 for the year.
Jul 23 - 11:01 PM

Andrew Toles went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a win over the Cardinals on Saturday.

The multi-hit game was the first for Toles as a major leaguer. The 24-year-old has had a strong start to his big league career, hitting .391/.440/.478 with two doubles and a stolen base in 10 games. He played right field on Saturday, and between Joc Pederson's struggles and Yasiel Puig's ailments, Toles could find more playing time in the weeks ahead.

Max Scherzer struck out 10 batters without walking anybody and held the Padres to two runs in seven innings, but had to settle for a no-decision as the Nationals beat the Padres 3-2 on Saturday.

The only damage was a two-run homer by Ryan Schimpf in the second inning. Scherzer leads the majors with 181 strikeouts and has walked only 35 in 141 2/3 innings. He has a stellar 2.92 ERA. The only thing keeping him from being a fantasy monster is his relatively modest 10-6 record.
Jul 23 - 10:55 PM

Adrian Gonzalez hit his eighth home run of the season in a win over the Cardinals on Saturday.

The homer was the solo variety, hit off Cards starter Mike Leake in the sixth inning. His power outage has been baffling, as Gonzalez has traditionally averaged 22 home runs over his big league career. The 34-year-old is hitting .280/.357/.401 with 47 RBI and 37 runs scored through 95 games.
