Jason Hammel lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs Monday against the Tigers.

The Royals need Hammel to come alive with Danny Duffy down, but it showed no signs of happening tonight. He walked four, and his ERA increased to 6.18. Still, the Royals probably can't take him out of the rotation now.
May 30 - 12:20 AM

Joakim Soria took his fourth blown save and second loss after giving up four runs Monday against the Tigers.

Soria entered with a 7-6 lead in the eighth and didn't retire any of the five batters he faced. It caused his ERA to double from 1.59 to 3.18.
May 30 - 12:19 AM

J.D. Martinez clubbed his eighth homer Monday against the Royals.

It was a three-run shot off Mike Minor. Martinez's eight homers have come in 17 games since he returned from the disabled list.
May 30 - 12:17 AM

Whit Merrifield homered, tripled and doubled against the Tigers on Monday.

Merrifield had a chance to go for the cycle, but he flied out in his final at-bat in the seventh and the Royals couldn't get back to him in the ninth. That's because Merrifield was hitting seventh, even though he's been one of the Royals' best hitters. After tonight, his .828 OPS is the best on the squad, and he has 135 points of OBP on leadoff man Alcides Escobar (.341 to .206).
May 30 - 12:16 AM

Edinson Volquez finally notched his first win after holding the Phillies to one run and three hits over six innings on Monday.

Volquez had been 0-7 with a 4.82 ERA. The four runs the Marlins scored tonight was their second-highest total in one of his starts this season. They've scored one or two runs in seven of his 10 outings.
May 29 - 11:58 PM

Jeremy Hellickson surrendered four runs in six innings Monday in a loss to the Marlins.

Hellickson's horrible strikeout rate didn't hurt him in the early going, but it's taking a serious toll now; he ends May 1-3 with a 7.04 ERA after going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in April. We wouldn't expect a big rebound.
May 29 - 11:56 PM

Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer off the Phillies' Jeremy Hellickson on Monday.

Because of Martin Prado's injuries, Dietrich has played more than expected this year. However, he's failed to take advantage of the situation, hitting .227/.324/.361 in 119 at-bats. He's a better player than that, but he's still going to head back to the bench if the Marlins can get Prado healthy.
May 29 - 11:54 PM

Michael Saunders went 0-for-4 against the Marlins on Monday, dropping his average to .226.

Now that Howie Kendrick is back, Saunders can no longer count on simply being penciled in against right-handers. He's hitting just .226/.270/.402 while also playing below average defense in the outfield. The Phillies would prefer he step it up and hopefully give himself some trade value in July, but Kendrick looks like the better player right now.
