Brandon Belt (concussion) reported improvement with his post-concussion symptoms on Friday, but there remains no clear timetable for his return at the moment.

Belt is scheduled to see a specialist over the weekend in San Francisco. He's eligible to come off of the disabled list as soon as Sunday, but that looks like a longshot at this point.

Ryan Sweeney homered and drove home four runs on Friday, powering the Cubs to a 7-6 victory over the Cardinals in an afternoon matinee at Wrigley Field.

Sweeney got the Cubs on the board in the second inning with a three-run shot off Joe Kelly, then tacked on an RBI single his next time up. Even with the 2-for-4 effort though, he’s hitting a mere .221/.264/.302 on the season and has little value outside of NL-only formats.

Hector Rondon secured his 12th save of the season on Friday, working a scoreless ninth inning to protect a one-run lead against the Cardinals.

It's the first save chance that the Cubs have generated for him in over a week, and with his recent struggles it was a much needed clean inning from the big right-hander. He owns a 3.72 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 40/13 K/BB ratio over 36 1/3 innings, but has to be on his toes with Neil Ramirez looming and ready to take his job at any moment.

Travis Wood struggled in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Friday afternoon, surrendering five runs (two earned) on seven hits over his five innings of work.

The veteran southpaw punched out five while walking one. He struggled to keep the ball in the yard on a windy day at Wrigley Field, serving up a pair of solo home runs to Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday. On the plus side, he managed to help his own cause by blasting his third long ball of the season. He’ll carry a disappointing 5.06 ERA and 1.53 WHIP into Wednesday’s matchup against the Rockies

Matt Holliday had three hits, including his ninth home run of the season on Friday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Holliday connected on a solo blast off Travis Wood in the fifth inning, knotting the score at 5-5. With the three-hit effort, he’s now hitting .269/.374/.414 with the nine homers, 52 RBI and a pair of stolen bases on the season.
Jul 25 - 7:54 PM

Matt Carpenter went 3-for-5 and belted a solo home run in a losing effort against the Cubs on Friday afternoon.

Carpenter’s solo shot off Travis Wood in the fifth inning was his sixth homer of the season. He’s enjoying another very solid season atop the Cardinals lineup, slashing .282/.375/.393 with 65 runs scored and 36 RBI.
Jul 25 - 7:54 PM

Joe Kelly was hit hard in Friday’s no-decision against the Cubs, allowing five runs on eight hits over just 4 2/3 frames.

The right-hander struck out four and walked two on the afternoon. Most of the damage against him came via the long ball, with Ryan Sweeney blasting a three-run homer in the second inning and opposing starter Travis Wood connecting on a solo shot in the fourth. He’ll look to get back on track when he does battle against the Padres in San Diego on Thursday.

Kyle Gibson (back) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday, and if all goes well he will make his next start on Tuesday against the Royals.

He had been scheduled to start on Wednesday, but was scratched due to back stiffness. The 26-year-old owns an 8-8 record, 4.19 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 54/30 K/BB ratio over 107 1/3 innings through his first 19 starts.
