Rockies optioned RHP Jeff Hoffman to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Hoffman had a shot at claiming the final spot in the Rockies' rotation this spring, but he didn't pitch well enough. The 24-year-old right-hander will be up at some point this summer.
Cubs optioned 3B Jeimer Candelario to Triple-A Iowa.
The 23-year-old corner infield prospect made his major league debut last July, but he only got 11 at-bats in his six-day stay. Candelario hit .283/.376/.464 with 13 home runs and 77 RBI in 132 games last season between Double-A and Triple-A.
Cubs optioned RHP Alec Mills to Triple-A Iowa.
Mills will function as organizational rotation depth for the Cubs in 2017 after being acquired in a February trade with the Royals. He put up a 6.00 ERA in six Cactus League innings.
Cubs optioned RHP Jake Buchanan to Triple-A Iowa.
Buchanan had a 7.56 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance this spring in the Cactus League. The right-hander will likely work out of the rotation at Iowa.
Cubs released RHP Jim Henderson.
Henderson signed a non-guaranteed minor league contract with the Cubs in late January and went on to post a 9.64 ERA in 4 2/3 innings this spring in the Cactus League. The veteran right-hander should be able to latch on elsewhere, but it will be another minor league deal.
Luis Valbuena has been sent for an MRI on his sore left hamstring.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he's confident the injury is minor, but the club wants to make sure with Opening Day fast approaching. Valbuena left Wednesday's split-squad Cactus League game against the Rangers after experiencing some hamstring soreness. There should be an update on his status Friday.
Kendall Graveman has been named the Opening Day starter for the Athletics.
A's manager Bob Melvin made that announcement Thursday in camp, adding that Sean Manaea and Jharel Cotton will follow Graveman in the club's season-opening series against the Angels. The fourth and fifth spots are to be determined. Graveman, 26, posted a relatively underwhelming 4.11 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 108/47 K/BB ratio in 186 innings (31 starts) last season for Oakland. He'll make for a decent streaming option at times in standard fantasy leagues.
Joe Wendle (shoulder) is scheduled to play catch Thursday for the first time in more than a week.
Wendle has been held out of Cactus League action since March 7 because of a shoulder injury. A recent MRI showed no structural issues, but the 26-year-old probably won't make Oakland's roster anyway.
