Rays released RHP David Carpenter.

Carpenter had a 3.12 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, and six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings this spring in the Grapefruit League. He should latch on with another team, on another non-guaranteed minor league deal.

Marlins optioned RHP Severino Gonzalez to Triple-A New Orleans.

Gonzalez posted a 3.55 ERA in two starts and five relief appearances this spring in Grapefruit League play. It's not clear yet whether he's going to work out of the bullpen or rotation for the New Orleans Baby Cakes.

Marlins optioned OF Destin Hood to Triple-A New Orleans.

Hood spent most of the 2016 season at Triple-A, batting .267/.316/.435 with 15 home runs, 80 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 126 games. The 26-year-old will continue operating as organizational outfield depth for the Fish.

Michael Taylor is back in Nationals camp Thursday.

Taylor was excused from the club for a week following the death of his father. The funeral is actually on Monday, but Taylor is fighting for a spot on the Nationals' bench and wanted to get back and play.

Brad Boxberger (lat) will take a week off from throwing and then build back up.

Boxberger has been bothered by a lat issue for much of spring training and still can't get over the hump with the injury. He'll try a different approach with the hope that one full week of rest might do the trick. The right-handed setup man is aiming to join the Rays' bullpen sometime in mid-to-late April. He will open the 2017 regular season on the 10-day disabled list.
Mar 23 - 9:45 AM

Pirates reassigned RHP Brandon Cumpton, OF Eury Perez, LHP Dan Runzler, RHP Jason Stoffel, INF Eric Wood, and 1B/OF Joey Terdoslavich to minor league camp.

No surprises among this round of cuts from Pirates camp. Cumpton hasn't appeared in a game at the major league level since the 2014 season. He underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in 2015.
Mar 23 - 9:12 AM

Pirates optioned C Elias Diaz to Triple-A Indianapolis.

As expected, Chris Stewart will open the 2017 season as the backup to Pirates starting catcher Francisco Cervelli. Diaz needed surgery last September for a leg infection, but he should be fine for Opening Day with the Indianapolis Indians.
Mar 23 - 9:06 AM

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington confirmed Thursday that Jung Ho Kang will not be ready for Opening Day.

That assumption could have been made without Huntington's help given that Opening Day is less than two weeks away and Kang still hasn't arrived at Pirates camp in Bradenton, Florida. The infielder is trying to secure a work visa in South Korea, but his latest criminal case is complicating matters. Kang was charged with his third DUI in seven years on December 2 in Seoul when he struck a guardrail with his car and fled the scene. He later tried to pin it on the person in the passenger seat but authorities quickly proved that false. There is no timetable for Kang's return to the Pirates' active roster.
