Kyle Schwarber is not in the Cubs' lineup Friday.

He'll take a seat with the Blue Jays throwing lefty J.A. Happ. Ben Zobrist is in left field and Ian Happ is at second base.

Brewers signed OF Quintin Berry to a minor league contract.

Berry had been playing for the independent league Long Island Ducks after the Twins released him back in May. He's been assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs and could be a pinch-running option for the Brew Crew next month.

Tony Sipp (calf) is on track to begin a rehab assignment "toward end of homestand," on August 24, according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch.

Sipp has been out all month with a sore left calf. He could potentially make it back before the end of August.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that he was "a little curious" why Joe Jimenez's velocity was down in his last appearance Wednesday.

Jimenez was sitting at 93 mph against the Rangers, down from the mid- to high-90s that he usually throws. He was charged with three runs -- two earned -- over just one-third of an inning in the appearance. The Tigers and Jimenez insist the reliever is healthy, although it will be interesting to track his velocity moving forward. Jimenez is viewed as the team's closer of the future, but he's posted a 12.54 ERA over 11 appearances in the majors and now is having velocity issues. That, combined with Shane Greene pitching well, probably means it's safe for those stashing Jimenez in deeper formats to go ahead and drop him.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Thursday that Odubel Herrera (hamstring) "might have to go on the DL."

"We’re thinking a lot about it," the skipper added. Herrera missed a third straight game Thursday with a strained left hamstring and he hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped. The injury comes at a poor time for Herrera's fantasy owners, as he's been one of the hottest hitters in baseball with a .379/.431/.636 line during his current 17-game hitting streak.

Masahiro Tanaka (shoulder) did not throw a bullpen session Thursday as initially anticipated.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi insisted that everything was fine with Tanaka, so it sounds like it could just be the club altering their schedule for the righty rather than it being any sort of setback. The club had been hoping that Tanaka will be ready to rejoin their rotation next week, so we'll continue to work under that assumption until we hear otherwise.

Zack Wheeler (arm) has resumed a throwing program.

It sounds like it's only been flat-ground work so far but that Wheeler is nearing a return to a mound. The right-hander is working his way back from a stress reaction in his pitching arm. Wheeler should make it back sometime this season if all goes well, but there's no timetable for his return.

Dillon Gee is expected to get a start for the Twins during Monday's doubleheader against the White Sox.

The start had been expected to go to Dietrich Enns (shoulder), but he was placed on the disabled list Thursday. Gee will be pitching on three days' rest after he made a relief appearance Thursday, but he threw only 36 pitches over 2 2/3 scoreless innings. The veteran righty holds a 3.16 ERA and 22/8 K/BB ratio over 25 2/3 innings in his eight appearances -- one start -- in the majors this season.
