Royals general manager Dayton Moore said that Kris Medlen (elbow) will depart for a minor league rehab assignment "sooner rather than later."

Medlen, who signed a two-year deal with the Royals over the winter, is being brought along slowly after undergoing the second Tommy John surgery on his career last March. The team wants him to build up to five innings before going on a rehab assignment. It's unclear whether he's coming back as a starter or reliever.

Matt Harrison (back) threw 77 pitches Thursday in an extended spring training game.

The next step calls for him to throw a bullpen session Sunday in Arlington, which could set him up to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week. A return before the end of June appears possible. Harrison is currently working his way back from spinal fusion surgery.

Red Sox placed OF Daniel Nava on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 26, with a sprained thumb.

It was obvious that something would have to give with Carlos Peguero joining the team, so putting Nava on the disabled list enables the Red Sox to keep him in the organization rather than expose him to waivers. The 32-year-old is batting just .159/.250/.190 through 27 games this season and the thumb injury has apparently been bothering him for a while.

Red Sox recalled LHP Robbie Ross from Triple-A Pawtucket.

He'll replace the injured Daniel Nava (thumb) on the active roster. Ross has already had a couple of stints with the big club this season, posting a 5.14 ERA with nine strikeouts and six walks over 14 innings of work.

David Ortiz is not in Thursday's lineup against the Rangers.

It's not unexpected, as Red Sox manager John Farrell said on WEEI on Thursday that Ortiz will be held out of the lineup for a couple of days to work on his swing. The veteran slugger has just one hit in his last 20 at-bats and is batting just .216/.303/.377 with six home runs and 18 RBI on the year. Hanley Ramirez will serve as the designated hitter Thursday while Brock Holt will play left field.

Dodgers prospect 1B Cody Bellinger went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI on Wednesday for High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Bellinger is playing beyond his years this season despite making the jump directly from Rookie ball to the California League. The 19-year-old is batting .275/.346/.509 with 21 extra-base hits (eight home runs) and 30 RBI through 44 games. He’s been particularly hot of late, too, hitting safely in 20 of his last 21 games with an impressive .313/.364/.638 batting line in that span.
May 28 - 4:40 PM

Athletics prospect SS Yairo Munoz went 2-for-4 with a home run, triple and pair of RBI on Wednesday for Low-A Beloit.

The home run gives Munoz five this season, and he’s batting .284/.317/.444 with 14 extra-base hits over 44 games in the Midwest League. The 20-year-old shortstop doesn’t have the hype of Franklin Barreto, the team’s other notable shortstop prospect, but he’s quickly making a name for himself with a strong showing in his full-season debut. Munoz has really padded his stats in his last nine contests, with a .421/.436/.763 batting line and three home runs in 39 plate appearances in that span. However, with Barreto handling shortstop duties for High-A Stockton, it seems unlikely that Munoz will receive a promotion anytime soon.
May 28 - 4:39 PM

Leonys Martin is not in Thursday's lineup against the Red Sox.

Delino DeShields will start in center field and bat leadoff against Red Sox rookie left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez. Chances are Martin will be back in there Friday with right-handed knuckleballer Steven Wright on the hill.
