Paul Maholm is likely to start on Saturday against the Padres in place of the injured Josh Beckett (hip).

He's expected to take the ball unless he's needed relief on Thursday or Friday. Red Patterson will be on standby at Triple-A Albuquerque in case Maholm does have to pitch in relief over the next couple days. He can be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Ian Desmond exited Thursday's game against the Orioles after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.

Desmond initially stayed in the game and tried to play defense the next inning, but he felt too much pain while making warm-up throws. The shortstop figures to undergo an X-ray to make sure he didn't break anything.

Brewers recalled RHP Jimmy Nelson from Triple-A Nashville.

Nelson will take Marco Estrada's spot in the rotation starting on Saturday against the Cardinals. The young right-hander boasts a 1.46 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 114/32 K/BB ratio over 111 innings this season at Nashville and is worth gambling on in all fantasy formats.
Jul 10 - 9:37 PM

Brewers placed LHP Wei-Chung Wang on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder tightness.

Wang gave up two runs over a relief inning Thursday to push his ERA up to 11.12. The Rule 5 pick has some talent, but he's clearly not big league-ready and is probably better off being stashed on the DL. It's not clear how long he'll be out.

Masahiro Tanaka has been diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.

Oh boy. The Yankees are saying that the tear is small and Tanaka could return after six weeks following a platelet-rich plasma injection. The club noted that the right-hander has seen three doctors and none of them have recommended surgery at this point. However, general manager Brian Cashman also isn't ruling out an operation eventually being required. Tanaka is in the first year of a seven-year, $155 million contract.
Jul 10 - 9:01 PM

Phillies transferred LHP Cliff Lee from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

It's a paper move, as Lee will be eligible to return on July 18 and is slated to rejoin the Phillies' rotation on July 19. The veteran left-hander allowed three earned runs over four innings Wednesday at High-A Clearwater in his second rehab start. He'll make one more rehab appearance before returning.
Jul 10 - 8:48 PM

Phillies optioned RHP David Buchanan to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Cliff Lee (elbow) will be ready to rejoin the rotation after the All-Star break, so Buchanan's time in the Phillies' rotation is over. He put up a 4.40 ERA but did go out with a bang, tossing seven innings of one-run ball Thursday.
Jul 10 - 8:46 PM

Phillies purchased the contract of OF Grady Sizemore from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

They had to prior to the All-Star break or Sizemore was likely to opt out of his contract. The 31-year-old batted .289/.360/.378 with one homer over 10 games for Lehigh Valley to earn the promotion. He hit only .216/.288/.324 for the Red Sox before being released, however, and is no safe bet to turn it around in Philly. Sizemore also isn't guaranteed regular playing time.
