Alex Avila continued his hot hitting by drilling a solo home run during Wednesday's loss to the Royals.

His blast off starter Ian Kennedy couldn't prevent his team from getting scorched tonight. It was his 11th homer of the season to go with a marvelous .321/.435/.597 slash line and 28 RBI. His .245 career batting average and .426 BABIP this season indicate severe regression is on the way soon.

Miguel Cabrera hit a solo home run on a 2-for-4 night against the Royals on Wednesday.

He took starter Ian Kennedy over the wall in the sixth frame. The veteran superstar has battled some nagging injuries all season but seems to be slowly rounding into form and is now batting .265/.360/.454 with 10 home runs and 38 RBI. Those are not the numbers his owners were hoping for when they drafted him. Don't be surprised if he kicks it up a notch or two in the second half.

Rays designated RHP Danny Farquhar for assignment.

Farquhar tossed an inning of scoreless relief in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates, but that was not enough to save him from the DFA. Prior to the appearance, the 30-year-old right-hander had been pitching to a 4.24 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 33/22 K/BB ratio in 34 innings. Farquhar has had major league success in the past -- 3.06 ERA in 35 1/3 frames last season -- and could see some interest on waivers.

Daniel Norris gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings and was charged with a loss to the Royals on Wednesday.

Most of the damage came on a pair of home runs -- a two-run shot by Salvador Perez and a solo blast by Mike Moustakas. Both of those longballs and an RBI double by Alex Gordon contributed to a four-run fourth inning that sent Norris to the showers early. He falls to 4-6 with an even 5.00 ERA and woeful 1.62 WHIP on the season. Norris lines up for two starts next week if his owners are brave enough to use him.

Ben Zobrist (wrist) will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday.

Zobrist has been out of action with left wrist inflammation since June 13. Now that he is ready for a rehab assignment, it might not be long before he is able to return to the team. That could potentially come at some point next week.

Marcus Stroman hurled 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to beat the Orioles 4-0 on Wednesday.

He punched out eight batters and walked just one. He surrendered five base hits -- all singles -- and took advantage of an early lead to cruise through the game without much of a challenge. His record improves to 8-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 16 starts. He has 84 strikeouts and 24 walks in 100 1/3 innings of work.

Kris Bryant left Wednesday's game against the Nationals due to what the Cubs are terming a "mild-to-moderate" right ankle sprain.

Bryant rolled his ankle when he stepped on third base after catching a routine pop up in the fifth inning. A subsequent X-ray came back negative for structural damage. The Cubs have not yet determined whether the reigning NL MVP will require a stay on the disabled list. He will be reevaluated on Thursday.

Steve Pearce went 3-for-3 and scored a run in Wednesday's win over the Orioles.

All three hits were singles. The veteran has missed a lot of time with various injuries and got off to an awful start to the season but has turned things around of late. He is batting .275/.328/.459 with five homers and 16 RBI in 109 at-bats.
