Conor Gillaspie went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Reds.

Gillaspie connected for a solo home run off Dan Straily in the third inning. That would stand as the Giants' only run of the contest. It was Gillaspie's fourth dinger of the 2016 campaign. In addition to that quartet of taters, the 29-year-old third baseman is slashing .250/.298/.405 and has driven in 15 runs in 116 at-bats. He holds no fantasy value.

Rangers designated INF Matt E. Duffy for assignment.

Poor, poor Duffy. He just hasn't a great go of things lately. The Astros designated him for assignment on July 16. He was subsequently scooped up off waivers by the Rangers on July 23, but just four days later, has once again been DFA'ed. The 27-year-old infielder has received only 12 major league plate appearances in his career to-date.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said that the newly acquired Lucas Harrell will pitch out of the rotation.

The Rangers acquired Harrell and reliever Dario Alvarez in a trade with the Braves earlier on Wednesday. Harrell's future role with the team wasn't immediately obvious -- they could have started him or shifted him to the bullpen as a long-arm -- but Daniels cleared up the matter. Harrell will start, with his first outing in a Rangers uniform set for Sunday's showdown with the Royals. The 31-year-old right-hander held a 3.38 ERA and a 21/12 K/BB ratio in five starts (29 1/3 innings) with the Braves.

Dillon Overton will start against the Indians on Saturday.

Overton has made three spot starts for the A's this season, most recently taking a no-decision after allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings against the Astros on July 19. Overall, he has surrendered an uncomfortable 14 runs on 24 hits over 15 innings. He shouldn't receive DFS consideration for this upcoming spot start.
Jul 27 - 6:55 PM

Dan Straily pitched well in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Giants, surrendering one run on three hits over 7 2/3 innings.

Straily struck out five and walked one on the afternoon. He will be able to tell his grandchildren about this one, as he out-pitched potential NL Cy Young winner Madison Bumgarner in order to secure the win. The only run to score on his watch came when Conor Gillaspie rocked a solo homer to right in the bottom of the third inning. With this marvelous outing under his belt, Straily now holds a 3.84 ERA and 1.15 WHIP for the season as a whole. He will look to repeat Wednesday's result in a home start against the Cardinals next time out.

Trevor Plouffe (rib) will participate in live batting practice on Friday.

Plouffe has had no setbacks in his recovery from a fractured rib and the Twins are encouraged enough in his progress that they will push up his scheduled batting practice to Friday. Assuming that goes smoothly, he should be able to begin a rehab assignment in short order. In 58 games prior to the injury, Plouffe was hitting .252/.283/.399 with seven homers and 27 RBI.
Jul 27 - 6:45 PM

Madison Bumgarner was stupendous in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Reds, striking out nine and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over eight innings.

Bumgarner won't lose many pitching duels, but Reds starter Dan Straily was just a touch better than him in this one. It was a fine start nonetheless. Tucker Barnhart pushed across a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and Jay Bruce burned Mad-Bum with a solo homer in the seventh. Otherwise, the ace southpaw kept the scoreboard clean. He will carry a sharp 2.09 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 170/36 K/BB ratio (150 2/3 innings) into a road date with the Phillies next time he toes the rubber.
Jul 27 - 6:37 PM

Chris Stewart (knee) could begin a rehab assignment next week.

According to Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk, Stewart's rehab assignment would likely boot up in the middle or later portion of the week after the calendar flips to August. The catcher ran the bases on Wednesday and is expected to ramp up baseball activities over the weekend. While Stewart has been plagued by knee and ankle woes during the summer months, the July MRI on his knee revealed wear and tear, as opposed to structural damage.
