Jonathan Stewart rushed three times for 23 yards in the Panthers' third preseason game Friday night.
All of Stewart's yards came through a giant hole on the right side in the first quarter. He was stuffed on his other two official carries, but he flashed a nice spin move to create something out of nothing on a run which was ultimately called back. Unlikely to play in the final preseason game, Stewart finishes the exhibition season with six carries for 33 yards and one catch for six yards. He is shaping up as a solid if not spectacular RB2.
Cam Newton completed 8-of-20 passes for 61 yards and two interceptions Friday night against the Patriots.
Newton struggled all night, overthrowing Kelvin Benjamin badly on two early throws and showing inconsistent accuracy despite little to no pressure. Both interceptions came on back-foot throws, the first of which was a terrible ball thrown ball both short and too far infield. It was an ugly game, but ultimately not much of a concern for the reigning MVP. He is still safe to take as the overall QB1.
Saints TE Michael Hoomanawanui was carted off the field with a leg injury in Thursday night's preseason game.
It looked severe enough that we're marking Hoomanawanui out indefinitely. (Love having to spell that name.) The player once known as "Illinois Mike" is the Saints' blocking tight end behind Coby Fleener and Josh Hill.
Bucs WR Donteea Dye exited Friday's third preseason game with a hamstring injury and will not return.
Dye returned the opening kick, and then he was done. He received some three-wide reps last season, but is competing for No. 5 duties this summer.
Rookie RB Keith Marshall exited Friday night's preseason game with a sprained elbow.
It's probably a day-to-day injury, but will cost Marshall a big opportunity with Matt Jones (shoulder) inactive. Marshall was rotating first-team snaps with Rob Kelley in the Kirk Cousins group before going for X-rays on his arm. Marshall's injury may force the Skins to add a running back via free agency or trade.
Panthers P Mike Scifres exited Friday night's preseason game with a knee injury.
Scifres took a shot to the leg early in the game. He shanked the next punt before being ruled out. Kasey Redfern, who Scifres is competing with for the starting job, will close out the game.
Blaine Gabbert is expected to start the 49ers' third preseason game.
As ESPN's Bob Holtzman notes, it's an "indication" Colin Kaepernick "will have to play really well" to win the 49ers' starting job. It won't be hard to play better than Gabbert, but Gabbert getting the start in the regular season dress rehearsal remains notable. Gabbert can probably still escape as the likely Week 1 starter if he plays competently and Kaepernick struggles at all.
ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton believes Corey Brown (shoulder) could be on the roster bubble.
Brown will not play in the third preseason game because of a shoulder injury. Newton does not believe the injury will necessarily cost him a spot, but it could if Kevin Norwood or Stephen Hill show out Friday night. Newton adds Brown does not bring anything different to the table than Damiere Byrd, who the Panthers seemed to be enamored with.
