Yangervis Solarte hit his first major league homer Thursday off the Rays' Grant Balfour.

Solarte, who had cooled off in recent days, also doubled and singled tonight. The homer, which came with the Yankees already up 8-2, gave Solarte his first run scored in 10 days and his first ribbies in nine days.

Brian Roberts went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in his return to the Yankees' lineup on Thursday.

Roberts hadn't played in five days because of a back strain. He was just 4-for-31 this season before his big game tonight.

Sean Rodriguez grounded into a triple play and homered in an eventful night Thursday against the Yankees.

It was the second time in his career that he's grounded into a triple play. Rodriguez was making his first start in 10 days, as the Rays currently have too many right-handed hitters looking for platoonmates. Rodriguez is certainly worth starting against lefties and he can play just about everywhere, but the Rays also want Logan Forsythe and Brandon Guyer in there against lefties and there isn't room for all of them. Ideally, they would trade Rodriguez and replace him with a lefty bat for the bench.

Adam Wainwright was on his game Thursday, striking out eight in an 8-0 two-hit shutout of the Nationals.

Waino walked three, but the only hit he allowed before a sharp single from Adam LaRoche with two outs in the ninth was a high chopper off the plate by Ian Desmond in the second inning. He retired 18 batters in a row at one point. While Wainwright has issued an uncharacteristic nine free passes over his first four outings, he also boasts a 1.80 ERA with 32 strikeouts across 30 frames. The tall right-hander will square off against the Mets and Pirates next week.

Taylor Jordan was touched up for seven runs -- five earned -- over just 5 1/3 innings in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals.

Jordan struck out four, but he gave up seven hits, walked a pair and hit a batter. He exited with the bases loaded in the sixth and watched Blake Treinen allow all three inherited runners to score. Jordan was excellent in his first start of the season, but he's now been knocked around the last two times out. Luckily for him, the guy he's competing with to remain in the rotation after Doug Fister (lat) returns, Tanner Roark, has also struggled with a 4.64 ERA. Jordan will try to bounce back next week versus the Angels.
Apr 17 - 10:47 PM

Edinson Volquez allowed two runs over seven innings in defeating the Brewers on Thursday.

Volquez had an ugly spring, but this makes three strong starts in a row for him to start the year. He actually threw just 77 pitches tonight, which is remarkable efficient for him. His GB/FB ratio was just average, but staying away from the walks (one) and homers (none) was enough for him to hold down the righty-dominated Brewers lineup for the second time in six days.
Apr 17 - 10:45 PM

Pedro Alvarez went 2-for-3 and smacked his sixth homer Thursday against the Brewers.

Alvarez is now tied with Mark Trumbo for the major league lead in homers. He also walked twice tonight. He entered the game 1-for-21 with no RBI in his previous six games.
Apr 17 - 10:41 PM

Andrew McCutchen hit his first homer of the year Thursday in the rout of the Brewers.

McCutchen's first-inning homer put the Pirates on the board against Yovani Gallardo. The homer came in his 57th at-bat of the season. Of course, McCutchen got off to a little bit of a slow start last year, too, and he bounced back in decent fashion.
