Carlos Beltran (elbow) came through his first Grapefruit League game on Friday feeling good.

He finished the day 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. The veteran outfielder indicated that he simply needs to get his timing back now, which he has plenty of time to do before the regular season opens. Slated to spend most of his time roaming the outfield though, he does possess injury risk.

Jameson Taillon (elbow) is scheduled to face live hitters next week for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last April.

Taillon threw a successful bullpen session on Friday and is scheduled to do so again on Tuesday. If all goes well, he'll progress to throwing live batting practice for the first time on Friday. He isn't expected to see any live game action until extended spring training, and won't appear in minor league games until May.
Mar 6 - 10:51 PM

Brennan Boesch belted a three-run homer off Brian Schlitter on Friday, powering the Reds to a 5-2 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League play.

Boesch seems likely to win a spot on the Reds bench this spring, where he'll serve as a backup outfielder and first baseman. He's off to a terrific start to the spring, going 3-for-6 (.500) with a homer and four RBI.
Mar 6 - 10:42 PM

Tony Cingrani delivered a strong effort in his Cactus League debut against the Cubs on Friday, striking out two over two scoreless frames.

Cingrani scattered two hits while walking one on the afternoon. Most importantly, he appears to be fully recovered from the shoulder issues that ended his 2014 season. The 25-year-old southpaw will enter the season was a spot secured in the Reds rotation and he represents a nice bounceback candidate in mixed league drafts.
Mar 6 - 10:37 PM

Javier Baez had a rough day at the dish in Friday's loss to the Reds, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

Baez is now hitless in his first five at-bats in Cactus League play. The 22-year-old has immense talent and potential but struggled mightily in his time with the Cubs in 2014, slashing .169/.227/.324 with a 95/15 K/BB ratio in 213 at-bats. He's going to strike out plenty and is likely to hit for a poor average, but the power is legit and should lead to plenty of mixed league value.
Mar 6 - 10:26 PM

Jon Lester dazzled in his Cubs debut on Friday, striking out three over two scoreless innings against the Reds in Cactus League action.

Lester allowed just one hit on the afternoon and didn't issue a walk. The 31-year-old southpaw and ace of the Cubs staff could be in line for a career season in 2015 with the move out of the hard-hitting American League East. He's fresh off a dominant 2014 campaign where he posted a 2.46 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 220/48 K/BB ratio across 219 2/3 innings for the Red Sox and Athletics.
Mar 6 - 9:58 PM

Chris Owings (shoulder) took batting practice for the first time of the spring on Friday without any issues.

He's in the process of recovering from October surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left shoulder. Owings is expected to miss the team's first 8-10 Cactus League contests but barring any setbacks should have no problem getting enough work in to be ready for Opening Day.

Brad Ziegler (knee) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday and is expected to be cleared to face live hitters soon.

Ziegler is in the process of recovering from microfracture knee surgery on his left knee that he underwent in September. He should be fully healthy and ready to go on Opening Day where he'll serve as the primary setup man for closer Addison Reed.
