Carlos Hyde suffered a concussion in the first half of the 49ers' preseason game Friday night.

Aug 27 - 1:54 AM

Asked Friday night if the 49ers have considered releasing Colin Kaepernick, coach Chip Kelly replied, "There's never been a conversation about cutting Colin Kaepernick."

Kaepernick was downright dreadful in Friday night's preseason game, looking entirely uncomfortable in new coach Chip Kelly's offense. If the 49ers aren't going to start Kaepernick, they have three options -- trade him, pay him $12 million not to play, or grant Kaepernick his release. If the 49ers opt to keep Kap around, that $12 million figure will be an awfully large bullet to bite.

Rookie WR Trevor Davis caught 1-of-4 targets for nine yards in Friday night's third preseason game.

The fifth-round pick out of Cal saw a handful of snaps with the first-team offense, but was behind Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, and Jared Abbrederis. Davis did play ahead of 2015 third-round pick Ty Montgomery. Davis' lowlight occurred when he dropped a pass for a would-be long gain delivered by Joe Callahan.

Ty Mongtomery was held catch-less in the Packers' third preseason game.

He was targeted once. Per PFF, Montgomery played only 3-of-26 snaps with Aaron Rodgers, signifying Montgomery is low on the Packers' wideout depth chart. Based on playing time, Montgomery looks to be behind Davante Adams, Jared Abbrederis, and Trevor Davis in addition to Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Packers WR Jared Abbrederis caught 3-of-3 targets for 25 yards and a touchdown in Friday night's third preseason game.

Abbrederis played behind Davante Adams, but Adams dropped a deep ball from Joe Callahan while Abbrederis made the most of his opportunities. The drawback with Abbrederis is that he is more of an inside-the-numbers receiver while Adams is theoretically a perimeter presence. The Packers' offense will be more limited if Abbrederis is the No. 3 receiver. It may still be the best option, however, because Abbrederis is more reliable and efficient.

James Starks rushed seven times for 22 yards and caught his lone target for a two-yard gain in the Packers' third preseason game.

Eddie Lacy opened the game as the Packers' feature back, but Starks entered after Lacy left and wound up seeing nearly as many plays with Aaron Rodgers. Beat writers expect Lacy and Starks to open the season in an RBBC, with Lacy emerging as the bellcow as winter sets in. Either way, Starks is an undervalued asset who should be owned in all fantasy leagues. He can provide standalone scoring and would be an every-week starter if Fat Eddie went down.

Torrey Smith was not targeted in the 49ers' third preseason game.

Smith is a part of the 49ers' starting offense, but you wouldn't know it if you based your takes solely on preseason games. He's seen exactly one target through three exhibition affairs, and has a goose egg to show for it. Smith revealed this week that his 2015 effort sagged because he felt like Colin Kaepernick "wasn't looking for him." Blaine Gabbert isn't looking at Smith, either.
Aug 27 - 1:20 AM

49ers TE Vance McDonald caught 1-of-4 targets for two yards in Friday night's third preseason game.

McDonald has quieted down since catching a 43-yard touchdown in the preseason opener, but he got the start Friday night and continued to be targeted heavily. If Blaine Gabbert keeps the starting job for a meaningful amount of time, McDonald could emerge as a sleeper to lead San Francisco in 2016 receiving.
