Cubs acquired LHP Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in exchange for SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford.
There had been reports of the Cubs attempting to work out a contract extension with Chapman, but the impending free agent left-hander seems intent on hitting the open market this winter. New York also tried an extension with Chapman back in June, but those talks obviously failed. The fire-balling 28-year-old will take over at closer on the north side of Chicago, with Hector Rondon shifting into a setup role. Chapman owns a dominant 2.01 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 44/8 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings since returning in May from a domestic violence suspension.
Yankees acquired SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
Torres is the centerpiece of this deal for the Yankees, who could be launching into a kind of firesale as they attempt a rolling rebuild. Torres, 19, has batted .275/.359/.433 with nine home runs, 47 RBI, 19 stolen bases, and 62 runs scored over 94 games this season in High-A ball while playing excellent defense at the shortstop position. Baseball America, MLB.com, and Baseball Prospectus all ranked him a top-50 prospect leading into 2016. It's a great get for New York.
Yankees acquired RHP Adam Warren, SS Gleyber Torres, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
Warren is returning to the Bronx after a mostly disappointing half-year stay on the north side of Chicago. The 28-year-old right-hander holds a 5.91 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 27/19 K/BB ratio in 35 innings (one start, 28 relief appearances) this season. He could move into the starting rotation with the Yankees if trades this week open up a vacancy. Initially he will probably work in mid-relief.
Yankees acquired OF Billy McKinney, SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, and OF Rashad Crawford from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
McKinney has struggled this season at Double-A Tennessee, batting just .252/.355/.322 with one home run in 88 games, but he was considered a top-100 prospect leading into the 2016 campaign and he's relatively young for the Double-A level at age 21. Chicago acquired McKinney from Oakland two years ago as part of the Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel trade. He'll try to get back on the radar in the Yankees' system.
Yankees acquired OF Rashad Crawford, SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, and OF Billy McKinney from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
Crawford is more of a throw-in here compared to the other names involved. The former 11th-round draft pick was batting just .255/.327/.386 with three home runs in 83 games this season at High-A Myrtle Beach, though he had racked up 22 stolen bases in 28 attempts.
ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports the Angels are listening on starting pitcher Hector Santiago.
And several clubs have already inquired, per Crasnick's sources. Santiago is sporting a career-worst 4.32 ERA in 110 1/3 innings this season, but the 28-year-old left-hander managed a sharp 3.55 ERA in 532 2/3 innings between 2011 and 2015. He is eligible for arbitration for the third and final time in 2017.
Brewers recalled OF Keon Broxton from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Broxton will rejoin the Brew Crew ahead of Monday night's series opener against the Diamondbacks. The 26-year-old outfielder has batted just .125/.253/.188 in 75 plate appearances this season at the MLB level.
Brewers placed 3B Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list with a right lower leg strain.
Middlebrooks suffered the injury on Sunday afternoon against the Cubs. He has batted just .111 (3-for-27) since his promotion to the major league level on July 3.
