According to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, the Mets are "very involved" in talks for Jay Bruce.
The Mets signed Justin Ruggiano on Saturday but are still looking for more outfield depth with Juan Lagares sidelined by a thumb injury and Yoenis Cespedes still hampered by a quad strain. It looked like Bruce might be headed to the Dodgers in a three-team trade on Friday but those talks seemed to have died down. Despite the trade rumors, Bruce will start as usual Saturday against the Padres.
Mets signed OF Justin Ruggiano.
It's a major league contract and Ruggiano will immediately take the spot of Jose Reyes, who was placed on the disabled list with an intercostal strain. Ruggiano will start in center field and bat seventh Saturday against the Rockies. He'll give the Mets some outfield depth with Juan Lagares (thumb) out and Yoenis Cespedes still feeling the effects of a strained quad.
Mets placed 3B Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with an intercostal strain.
Reyes was diagnosed with an intercostal strain earlier this week and will now sit down for at least the next 15 days. The 33-year-old has hit .239 with three homers, eight RBI and three steals since returning to the Mets earlier this month. His roster spot will be absorbed by Justin Ruggiano.
Padres optioned LHP Keith Hessler to Triple-A El Paso.
The Padres needed to clear a roster spot for Jarred Cosart, who was acquired from the Marlins on Friday. Hessler carries an underwhelming 11.25 ERA over five outings for the Friars this year.
Francisco Cervelli (foot) is back in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against the Brewers.
Cervelli left Friday night's game after taking a pitch off his right foot but it wasn't enough to keep him out of the lineup on Saturday. He'll start behind the plate and bat sixth against Brewers right-hander Chase Anderson. Pittsburgh is extremely thin at catcher with Chris Stewart rehabbing a knee injury so the Bucs dodged a bullet here.
Miguel Sano is not in the Twins' lineup Saturday against the White Sox.
Manager Paul Molitor wants to give him a day to clear his head. "I see him trying to do a little too much," said Molitor. "We'll give him a chance to watch tonight." Danny Santana will handle third base with Sano getting a breather on Saturday.
Tyler Flowers (hand) advanced to hitting off a tee on Saturday.
He's well ahead of schedule in his recovery from a fractured hand. The Braves are hoping he'll be back in the lineup in about two weeks. A.J. Pierzynski and Anthony Recker have filled in at catcher during his absence.
Leonys Martin delivered a two-run double off Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning on Saturday, propelling the Mariners to a 4-1 victory over the Cubs.
The Mariners entered the eighth inning trailing 1-0, but started a rally with a pair of leadoff walks against Jake Arrieta. Hector Rondon was summoned to face a pair of right-handers, retiring them both before Chapman came on to face Martin. Martin crushed a 1-1 offering to center field, plating the tying and go-ahead run. He then deftly swiped third base and scampered home on a wild pitch providing valuable insurance. Martin finished the day 2-for-4 and is now hitting .250/.324/.427 with 13 homers, 32 RBI and 11 stolen bases.
