Justin Upton went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a stolen base in a loss to the Astros on Thursday.

Upton is the kind of player who can frustrate fantasy owners with an 0-for-16 stretch and then do something like he did Thursday that makes him totally worth owning. Such is life with the 29-year-old, who is hitting .242/.351/.477 with nine homers, 23 RBI, 27 runs scored and four stolen bases on the year. It's been a rough month of May for Upton, but perhaps he can use Thursday's game as a springboard to brighter days ahead.

Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run home run, his 11th of the season, in Thursday's win over the Tigers.

We keep waiting for Gonzalez to fall off, and he keeps defying everyone. On Thursday, he teed off against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, lifting a two-run shot over the right field wall for his only hit in three at-bats. To illustrate how out-of-character this is, Gonzalez's career high for homers is 13, set in 141 games last year. He's now at 11 dingers through 40 games this season. His durability will keep him on the field most days, and if he keeps hitting .282/.380/.627 he'll be in the lineup for a long, long time. Until he stops hitting, he's a fantasy asset for his position eligibility as much as his bat.

J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Astros.

Martinez now has seven homers in 12 games since coming off the disabled list. Concerns about his Lisfranc sprain possibly affecting his on-field performance have effectively been put to bed. Martinez is also showing commendable patience, walking 13 times as compared to 11 strikeouts this far. In those 12 games, the 29-year-old is hitting .378/.540/.973 overall.

Mike Fiers allowed four runs on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings Thursday against the Tigers.

Fiers' ineffectiveness was shaping up to be the story of the game before Justin Verlander imploded, letting Fiers off the hook both anecdotally and on the scorecard. Even so, it was another disappointing turn in a season full of mostly disappointing turns for the 31-year-old, who now owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through nine starts. It's hard to imagine the Astros can't do better. Until they decide to, though, Fiers will presumably stay in the rotation, with a favorable matchup against the Twins on deck for Tuesday.

Justin Verlander cruised until a disastrous fourth inning, and he finishing having allowed six runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings in Thursday's loss to the Astros.

Verlander breezed through three scoreless frames before the Astros brought the lumber in the fourth. In that inning, he allowed a pair of two-run homers and yielded another solo jack, giving up five runs before it was all said and done. It was the second time in 10 starts this year that he's given up three homers. After a resurgent 2016 season, the 34-year-old hasn't shown that same dominance in 2017, owning a 4.87 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the year. Verlander will try to get things straightened out next week against the Royals.

Xander Bogaerts got his long-awaited first home run of the 2017 season Thursday, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in a 6-2 win over the Rangers.

Bogaerts got hold of a Nick Martinez offering in the third inning, lining it just over the top of the Green Monster to get him on the board. It's hard to believe he hadn't lucked into one before this, especially after he hit a career-best 21 dingers in 2016. It's a big one, but that's really the only knock against the 24-year-old this year, as he's been a terrific offensive performer by basically any other metric. Bogaerts is hitting .335/.398/.470 with eight steals, 17 RBI and 29 runs scored overall.
May 26 - 12:27 AM

Elvis Andrus hit his sixth home run of the year in a loss to the Red Sox on Thursday.

The solo shot was Andrus' only hit in four at-bats, as the Rangers struggled mightily against Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz. The shortstop set a career high with eight homers in 2016, but he's already got six this year roughly one-third of the way through. The steadily consistent 28-year-old also has seven steals and a .270/.313/.427 line in 47 games to date.
May 26 - 12:20 AM

Deven Marrero hit a two-run home run, his first of the season, in Thursday's win over the Rangers.

Marrero gave the Red Sox a little insurance with his eighth-inning blast, his first in 17 games this year and just his second as a major leaguer. His first came back in 2015. Marrero isn't known for his offense, batting .178/.229/.289 this year.
