Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) could miss up to four weeks.
Including this week's absence, Stewart has now missed 25 games since the start of 2012. Stewart is an effective workhorse when healthy but that's rarely been the case. Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whittaker saw similar workloads last week with Artis-Payne going for 58 yards on 13 touches while Whittaker tallied 56 yards on 10 touches. Until a frontrunner emerges from the Carolina backfield, it's hard to endorse either of them as anything more than flex plays.
Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is out for Week 4 against the Falcons.
He hasn't practiced since tweaking his hamstring in Week 2. Consider him week to week. Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whittaker will continue to share backfield work in Stewart's absence. Both are low-end flex options against Atlanta.
Tajae Sharpe (hamstring) remained limited in Thursday's practice.
We've yet to see real reason for concern over Sharpe's status, but Kendall Wright will be making his 2016 debut against the Texans. Sharpe's WR4 appeal is on the wane.
Eric Ebron (ankle) returned to practice on Thursday.
Ebron got the day off on Wednesday but the Lions were probably just managing his reps. He'll be fine for Sunday's game in Chicago. Consider him a back-end TE1 for that matchup.
Antonio Gates (hamstring) remained sidelined Thursday.
Gates seems likely to sit for the second straight week. His absence puts Hunter Henry on the TE1 radar against the Saints' atrocious defense.
Delanie Walker (hamstring) returned to practice on Thursday, getting in a limited session.
It puts Walker on track to return against the Texans, but doesn't guarantee it after he missed Week 3. Walker was sorely missed against the Raiders. Presumably not back to full health, he'll be a back-end TE1 if he suits up against Houston.
Rashad Jennings (thumb) expects to get a better idea of his Week 4 status on Friday.
"I'm doing everything I can," Jennings said. The tea leaves suggest Jennings will sit for his second straight game, but it's certainly possible he has a breakthrough. The Giants are playing in the Monday night game, so hopefully we get some concrete information by Sunday morning. Orleans Darkwa will be in the FLEX mix if Jennings sits.
Jay Cutler (thumb) was downgraded to "DNP" in Thursday's practice.
Cutler looks set to miss his second straight game. Brian Hoyer will have some back-end QB2 appeal against the Lions' leaky defense.
