CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Jake Marisnick "may be used as a chip to land a reliever."
They've been discussing Craig Kimbrel and Joaquin Benoit with the Padres and have also been in on other relievers. With Carlos Gomez now on board, Marsnick is expendable.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs are among the teams in "ongoing dialogue" with the Indians regarding Carlos Carrasco.
The Cubs seem determined to land a cost-controlled young starter, as they've also been talking to the Padres about Tyson Ross. It would take a hefty price to get Carrasco, as he's on a team-friendly four-year, $22 million contract and has flashed ace ability.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs have discussed Tommy Hunter with the Orioles.
The O's are expected to add payroll from an offensive standpoint, so they're looking to shed some elsewhere. Hunter is making $4.65 million this season before hitting free agency this winter.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles are trying to acquire both Ben Revere and Gerardo Parra.
Picking up two corner outfielders would allow them to move Chris Davis back to first base. Revere is making $4.1 million this season and is under team control through 2017, while Parra will be a free agent this winter.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mets "worked into the night" to acquire Jay Bruce from the Reds.
Rosenthal adds that the "expectation among many in the industry" is that they'll get a deal done. The Reds reportedly have interest in Zack Wheeler, who had been expected to go to the Brewers in the Carlos Gomez trade that fell apart. Bruce is under team control through 2017 at a relatively reasonable rate.
Arodys Vizcaino will serve as the Braves' closer following the trade of Jim Johnson.
Andrew McKirahan could get a few chances if the opposition is sending up a bunch of left-handed batters, but Vizcaino will be the main guy here. He's allowed only one run over nine innings since returning from a PED suspension. Obviously he needs to be added in fantasy leagues where he's still available.
Mets optioned C Anthony Recker to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Recker has hit just .123/.254/.228 over 22 games for the Mets this season. He's no longer needed with Travis d'Arnaud back.
Reds acquired RHP Keury Mella and INF Adam Duvall from the Giants in exchange for RHP Mike Leake.
Ranked prior to the season by Baseball America as the Giants' No. 4 prospect, Mella boasts a 3.01 ERA with 282 strikeouts over his first 272 1/3 pro innings. The 22-year-old has a ways to go but projects as a possible mid-rotation starter for the Reds.
