Hector Rondon nailed down his ninth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning in Monday's win over the Dodgers.

Entering to protect a two-run lead, Rondon cruised through the ninth on 13 pitches, striking out Howie Kendrick and inducing a couple groundouts. The Cubs lost starter Jason Hammel to a hamstring cramp after two innings but still managed to toss a one-hitter. Rondon hasn't pitched a ton this season because the Cubs are crushing everyone, but he's a perfect 9-for-9 in save opportunities and boasts a 1.04 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 27/2 K/BB ratio over 17 1/3 innings.

Braves sent INF Reid Brignac outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Brignac passed through waivers after being designated for assignment on Friday. The 30-year-old will serve as organizational depth in Triple-A.

Alex Wood recorded seven strikeouts but only lasted five innings Monday, allowing two runs in a loss to the Cubs.

Wood gave up only one extra-base hit on the day, but he also permitted six singles and issued three free passes. The good news is that the tight triceps which forced him to be scratched from his last start didn't appear to be an issue. Wood will be back on the hill this weekend against his former team, the Braves, at home.

Anthony Rizzo notched an RBI double in Monday's win over the Dodgers.

The Cubs plated two runs in the fifth on a Jason Heyward infield single and Rizzo's double and that wound up being enough. Rizzo also reached on a hit by pitch. The first baseman has really been fighting it over the last few weeks but has reached base five times over the last two days.
May 30 - 8:43 PM

Yasmani Grandal went hitless in three plate appearances Monday, watching his season batting line drop to .188/.281/.357.

The Cubs managed to hold the Dodgers to just one hit on the day even after losing starter Jason Hammel to a hamstring cramp after two innings. Grandal can't wait to flip the calendar to June, as he's batted an ugly .123/.183/.292 in May after a .295/.426/.477 April.

Collin McHugh went the distance against the Diamondbacks on Monday allowing three runs while striking out eight in an 8-3 victory.

It wasn't the prettiest outing as far as complete games go, as McHugh served up a couple home runs among the three runs he yielded. However, he also walked just one to go along with his eight punchouts and at Chase Field it was certainly an impressive effort. It's baby steps, but McHugh boasts a 26/3 K/BB ratio over his last 21 1/3 innings. He faces the A's at home this weekend.

Miguel Rojas left Monday's game against the Pirates with an apparent injury.

No official word yet on the injury or its severity, although Rojas appeared to be be favoring his shoulder after swinging. The Marlins should release an update on his status soon. Derek Dietrich replaced Rojas at second base.

Edwin Escobar's first start in the majors didn't go well, as he was lit up for eight runs -- seven earned -- over just 3 1/3 frames in a loss to the Astros.

The D'Backs surely didn't want to have to turn to Escobar in this one,as his numbers in the upper minors have been rather lackluster. But, with Shelby Miller (finger) and Rubby De La Rosa (elbow) on the shelf, they didn't have many options. There's a good chance Arizona will go with someone else this weekend against the Cubs. If Escobar gets trotted out there again, it will be ugly.
