Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated Friday that knee surgery is a "strong possibility" for Santiago Casilla.

They'll announce their decision later Friday evening. Casilla has been dealing with a cyst in his right knee since last season, and became enough of an issue recently that he had to be placed on the DL. If he undergoes the surgery, which appears likely at this point, the timetable for his recovery would be four weeks.

Scott Elbert (elbow) will pitch in minor league rehab games on Saturday and Sunday, where he'll likely face one hitter each game.

If all goes well with those two outings, he's expected to be activated from the disabled list and return to the Dodgers' bullpen next week. The 27-year-old lefty posted a 2.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 29/13 K/BB ratio in 32 2/3 innings for the Dodgers in 2012 and will give them another solid option in the middle innings.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated Friday that Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) will probably need 4-5 rehab games before returning to the lineup.

Ramirez said earlier in the day that he felt he was ready to return with his hamstring as is, but the organization is opting to play it safe and not rush the oft-injured shortstop back to the lineup. Look for him to return to the lineup in early June.

Jake Wesbrook (elbow) played catch on flat ground on Friday.

The encouraging news is that he said his elbow felt fine afterwards. He attempted to throw a from a mound for the first time on Wednesday, but had to cut the session short after feeling lingering pain in his elbow. He's not on a specific throwing program at the moment, they'll continue to play it day-by-day based on how he's feeling. He's still not anywhere close to returning to the rotation.

Darin Ruf has been dealing with a sore hand at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

That could be the determining factor as to why Michael Martinez was recalled rather than Ruf when Chase Utley (oblique) was placed on the DL. Through 42 games on the season, Ruf is batting .263/.341/.431 with five homers and 23 RBI at Triple-A. The 26-year-old figures to see some time in the majors later this year if healthy.

Jerry Hairston Jr. (knee, groin) will begin his minor league rehab assignment with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday.

Hairston originally landed on the disabled list with a left groin strain earlier this month, but then had a setback when he tweaked his knee. Barring any setbacks, he should be able to rejoin the Dodgers before the end of the month.

Jeff Francis (groin) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Friday.

He'll now progress to an outing in extended spring training before he's re-evaulated. Even when he is cleared to return, his rotation spot may not be secure after posting a 6.00 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 31/14 K/BB ratio through his first eight starts. He shouldn't be a consideration in most fantasy leagues.
May 24 - 7:22 PM

Rafael Betancourt (groin) will throw a bullpen session to determine whether he'll be available for Friday night's contest against the Giants.

Initially, it was feared that Betancourt would be headed for the disabled list after leaving Tuesday's game with a tight right groin, but he has made significant improvement in recent days. Even if he's unable to return on Friday, Betancourt should be available at some point over the weekend.
