Ravens TE Maxx Williams is sidelined with an ankle injury.

Williams missed Wednesday and Thursday's practices. Ben Watson seems to be emerging as the Ravens' No. 1 tight end, though Williams has five grabs through two games. Still only 23, Williams offers theoretical upside, but he doesn't seem poised to reach it any time soon.

Speaking Thursday, Kenny Britt said he had a "man-to-man" conversation with coach Hue Jackson about "stepping up."

Britt said Jackson has asked him to bring more energy "on- and off-the-field." Jackson acknowledged challenging the 29-year-old wideout, who has displayed embarrassing effort through his first two games as a Brown. Loafing, Britt has totaled two catches for 15 yards. He's seemed content to let Rashard Higgins, who was on the practice squad as recently as last week, take over as the Browns' No. 1 receiver. Britt has already reached now-or-never time with his new club.

Coach Ron Rivera said Carolina's backfield work will be determined by "flow of the game" and who is playing well.

Fantasy owners who used an early-round pick on Christian McCaffrey can't be too thrilled by this development. Essentially the Panthers are going with a hot-hand approach, which means McCaffrey's role is going to be different each week. For all his promise, McCaffrey has been out-touched by veteran Jonathan Stewart 35-30 in the early going. McCaffrey's day will eventually come, but it could be a while before he overtakes Stewart.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera admitted there's "some concern" for Ryan Kalil's (neck) availability for Week 3 against the Saints.

He's sat out both practices this week with a neck injury and doesn't seem to be making much progress. Tyler Larsen would likely fill in at center if Kalil can't get the green light.

ESPN Bengals reporter Katherine Terrell expects Tyler Eifert (back, knee) to miss Week 3 against the Packers.

Eifert didn't practice on Wednesday or Thursday and wasn't even seen on the rehab field. The Bengals will make an official ruling on his status after Friday's walkthrough, though Eifert's absence already seems like a foregone conclusion. Expect Tyler Kroft to start in his place.

Jordan Reed (chest, toe) was officially "limited" in Thursday's practice.

"The pain is becoming manageable," coach Jay Gruden said afterward. "We'll see how he does tomorrow." Gruden's comments come one day after he said Reed was "not healthy right now." The tea leaves suggest Reed will gut out his multiple injuries against the Raiders. His effectiveness will be anyone's guess.

Markus Wheaton (finger) has been removed from the Bears' Week 3 injury report.

Wheaton will make his 2017 debut against the Steelers, and should immediately slide in as the Bears' No. 2 receiver against his old team. In theory, there will be targets aplenty, but Wheaton offers little upside with Mike Glennon under center.
Sep 21 - 2:45 PM

Cam Newton (ankle, shoulder) remained "limited" on Thursday.

Newton is going to suit up against the Saints, but he's clearly hurting. Newton is off to a slow start, but the Saints' defense has been almost inconceivably bad through two games. It will be concerning if they're not a slump buster in Charlotte.
