Pirates placed RHP A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.
That could help to explain the Pirates acquiring J.A. Happ from the Mariners before the trade deadline, as the veteran southpaw will slide into the rotation to replace Burnett. It's unclear at the moment how much time Burnett may miss.
Angels optioned OF Efren Navarro to Triple-A Salt Lake.
He already had been designated for assignment but now needs to be optioned because of service time rules. Navarro, 29, is a .248/.306/.328 career hitter at the major league level.
Rangers purchased the contract of C Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Round Rock.
He'll back up Robinson Chirinos. Gimenez is hitting .243 with six home runs at Round Rock this season.
The Giants will place Tim Hudson on the disabled list due to a shoulder injury.
Hudson spent time on the DL earlier this season with a shoulder ailment, although both times it's looked like a phantom injury. There's no longer a spot in the rotation for the veteran following the acquisition of Mike Leake.
Tigers recalled RHP Jose Valdez from Triple-A Toledo.
Valdez holds a 3.83 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 36/28 K/BB ratio over 44 2/3 innings at Toledo. He'll be utilized in the middle innings.
Cardinals designated RHP Marcus Hatley for assignment.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Jonathan Broxton. Hatley was unscored upon in two appearances with the Cards during his brief time with the big club.
Pirates activated OF Gorkys Hernandez from the 15-day disabled list; sent him outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
He's now off the 40-man roster. Hernandez might remain in the minors for the rest of the season.
Robinson Cano (abdomen) remained out of the Mariners' lineup Friday.
He's likely to sit out through the weekend with a Grade 1 abdominal strain. The Mariners have brought up Ketel Marte for infield help while Cano recovers.
