Jedd Gyorko hit a game-tying homer in the seventh inning and a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth to help lead the Padres to a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Friday.

Gyorko was just called up on June 30 to help fill in for the injured Cory Spangenberg (knee). He showed his worth on Friday when he homered off of the ever-dominant Michael Wacha in the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1. He then helped ensure things wouldn't move to extras when he singled home Yangervis Solarte in the ninth inning to put the Padres up 2-1. Gyorko hit .283/.368/.500 with four home runs in 15 games for Triple-A El Paso after being sent down in early June and should see his share of playing time in the near future, though there's little to love on the fantasy front here.

Nelson Cruz went 2-for-5 and hit his 21st homer Friday as the Mariners beat the A's 9-5.

Cruz has two homers in three games during July after hitting just one in 25 games in June. It's not likely that he'll catch fire again like he did in April, but he should be a reliable power bat from here on in.
Jul 4 - 1:17 AM

Working the ninth with the Mariners up by six, Carson Smith allowed two runs in his inning Friday against the A's.

The Mariners haven't had any save chances since Fernando Rodney got the nod over Smith last Friday against the Angels. It might well be that Rodney gets the call again next time out. Smith hasn't done anything wrong, but Lloyd McClendon wants Rodney to win back the job.

Yangervis Solarte went 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in Friday's win over the Cardinals.

Don't expect to see Solarte legging out triples on a regular basis. The three-bagger was his first of the season and just the second of his career. He's hitting .249/.299/.367 with three homers and 29 RBI for the 2015 campaign and shouldn't be relied upon in fantasy formats, despite the newfound existence of wheels on those feet.
Jul 4 - 1:14 AM

Evan Scribner gave up two homers in two innings of relief Friday against the Mariners.

The home run ball is Scribner's bugaboo, and while he's one candidate to step in as Oakland's closer once Tyler Clippard is traded, those flyball tendencies might cause Edward Mujica to get the job instead. Scribner has given up nine homers this year, which is why his ERA stands at 3.64 despite a crazy 44/3 K/BB ratio in 42 innings.
Jul 4 - 1:13 AM

Brad Miller collected his eighth homer and his 12th double Friday against the A's.

It's Miller's second homer in four games. His struggles in limited action against left-handers have taken a toll on his numbers, but he's hitting .267/.357/.487 versus righties.
Jul 4 - 1:11 AM

Kolten Wong couldn't find any traction against the Padres on Friday, finishing the game 0-for-4.

Wong struggled on Friday, but it's not indicative of what he's done on the whole this season. His triple-slash of .283/.341/.451 stands in the upper tier of his position offensively and he's hit nine homers while driving in 36 runs and scoring 42. At just 24 years of age, there's still room for offensive improvement here.
Jul 4 - 1:09 AM

Mark Canha went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI against the Mariners on Friday.

The right-handed-hitting Canha keeps starting against lefties, even though he's struggled mightily against them this year. He did have a single against J.A. Happ tonight, but his big hit was a two-run double off right-handed reliever Carson Smith. All eight of his homers this season have come off righties. It's probably a big fluke, but the weird platoon splits are making it difficult for the A's to use him.
