Danny Valencia (wrist) has been scratched from the Mariners' starting lineup Tuesday.

Valencia is still working through some wrist discomfort related to a slide into third base on Friday night. Taylor Motter is starting at first base and batting sixth Tuesday night against Nationals right-hander Joe Ross.

Aaron Sanchez (finger) has not resumed throwing.

Sanchez landed on the disabled list over the weekend with a laceration (or blister) on his right middle finger. He told reporters Tuesday that he's frustrated by the lingering blister issues but will allow this one to fully heal before ramping up his rehab. It sounds like he'll be out for much longer than 10 days.

Stephen Drew (hamstring) has reported to extended spring training and could soon begin playing in games.

Drew has made very slow progress from a strained right hamstring, though manager Dusty Baker assured reporters last week that there has not been a significant setback. Drew could be ready for activation sometime next week if all goes well for him in West Palm Beach.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Brian Johnson is a "strong candidate" to start Saturday against the Mariners.

Johnson struggled in his one start this season at the major league level, but the 26-year-old left-hander owns a decent 2.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 37/17 K/BB ratio over 44 2/3 innings (seven starts) this season with Triple-A Pawtucket. He's been in the minors since April 19.

Jameson Taillon (cancer) threw 25 pitches off a mound Tuesday.

Taillon has made encouraging progress from his May 8 surgery for suspected testicular cancer, though Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk cautioned Tuesday that this is still very much a day-to-day situation. There's no real timetable for Taillon's return to the active major league roster.

Pablo Sandoval (knee) is out of the lineup at Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday due to illness.

That will delay his return to the Red Sox active roster by a couple of days. Sandoval needs to play back-to-back minor league games before the club considers activating him off the disabled list. He's been out since April 24 because of a right knee strain.

Brock Holt (vertigo) will visit a specialist in Pittsburgh sometime this week.

Holt continues to experience vertigo symptoms and has officially been pulled off his minor league rehab assignment. The utilityman has been on the disabled list since April 21 and remains out indefinitely.

Marco Hernandez is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left shoulder Friday.

And the subsequent rehab will take several months, likely stretching into the offseason. Hernandez injured his left shoulder during a May 3 game against the Orioles.
