Mark Melancon pitched another scoreless ninth inning, earning his 28th save as the Pirates escaped with a 3-2 victory against the Padres on Tuesday.

We're coming up on two months since Melancon last allowed an earned run. The Padres mounted a bit of a threat when Melvin Upton, Jr. singled with one out, but Melancon got Clint Barmes to line out and Yangervis Solarte to strike out to end the contest. The right-hander has been as reliable as they come, currently 28-for-29 in save opportunities with a 1.54 ERA and a 29/8 K/BB ratio in 41 innings.

Tests showed that Kolten Wong suffered a mild concussion during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Cubs.

Wong said after the game that he passed the test and is fine, but obviously that wasn't the case. That he says he's feeling OK suggests maybe he won't need to go on the 7-day concussion disabled list, but we should know more on Wednesday.

Francisco Liriano held the Padres to two runs in six innings in a no-decision as the Pirates eked out a win on Tuesday.

Liriano scattered four hits and a walk while striking out six. The only two runs scored on Matt Kemp's double in the third inning. The lefty keeps his ERA below 3.00 at 2.99 with a 1.01 WHIP and a 119/35 K/BB ratio in 108 1/3 innings. Liriano will lead the Pirates into the All-Star break with a home start against the Cardinals.
Jul 7 - 11:51 PM

Miguel Sano hit his first major league home run and the Twins raced past the Orioles 8-3 on Tuesday.

Sano hit the blast, a two-run shot, off Orioles starter Kevin Gausman in the first inning. He later collected an RBI walk, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI. Through six games the 22-year-old has been as advertised, hitting .450 with a 1.242 OPS and five RBI. If all goes as planned, the homer will be the first of many Sano will hit over the course of his career.
Jul 7 - 11:50 PM

Tyson Ross tossed two shutout innings in a rain-shortened start, and the Padres dropped Tuesday's game to the Pirates.

Ross allowed two hits, didn't issue a walk, and struck out one. The right-hander didn't take the mound following the delay while opposing starter Francisco Liriano did. Over 18 starts, Ross has a 3.56 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, and a 112/53 K/BB ratio in 103 2/3 innings. He'll start next at home against the Rockies after the All-Star break.
Jul 7 - 11:49 PM

Matt Kemp hit a two-run double in a 2-for-4 night on Tuesday as the Padres fell to the Pirates.

Kemp gave the Padres a 2-0 lead in the third inning when he doubled in a pair of runs, but it wasn't enough for an otherwise quiet offense. Kemp entered the game 2-for-23 (.087) in his previous seven games. He's had better seasons, as he's currently hitting .242/.282/.360 with six home runs and 44 RBI.
Jul 7 - 11:47 PM

Gregory Polanco delivered a run scoring triple late to help the Pirates edge the Padres on Tuesday.

Polanco finished 1-for-3 with a pair of walks on the evening. He tripled to bring in Sean Rodriguez and break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. All the Pirates had to do was bring in Mark Melancon from there. The 23-year-old has otherwise had a quiet year offensively, batting .232/.304/.336 with three home runs and 20 RBI.
Jul 7 - 11:45 PM

J.J. Hardy hit a two-run home run in a loss to the Twins on Tuesday.

Hardy hit the two-run shot off Kyle Gibson in the fifth inning. The homer was his fifth of the season, giving him 22 RBI. There haven't been many highlights in the first half for the 32-year-old, who's hitting .232/.263/.338 in 55 games.
