Cardinals released DE Matt Shaughnessy.
The Cardinals paid Shaughnessy a $500,000 roster bonus in March but are avoiding his $1.45 million base salary. Shaughnessy plays above-average run defense.
Texans waived WR Damaris Johnson and released DT Brandon Deaderick.
Johnson is a diminutive occasional deep threat and return specialist.
Texans waived RB Kenny Hilliard.
Hilliard was the 235th pick in May's draft. He wasn't able to leap any of Alfred Blue, Jonathan Grimes, or Chris Polk on the depth chart but could resurface on the practice squad. Hilliard averaged just 2.3 YPC on 48 preseason totes.
Texans waived NT Louis Nix.
Nix was the 83rd overall pick in last year's draft. He never played a down for the Texans after missing his entire rookie season with a wrist injury. The Texans then signed Vince Wilfork this offseason and drafted NT Christian Covington.
Bills waived WR Dezmin Lewis.
Lewis was the 234th overall pick in May's draft. He had a solid preseason finale with a 6-81 line but wasn't able to crack the Bills' crowded receiving corps.
Cardinals waived RB Robert Hughes.
Hughes is an interesting cut by the Cardinals because he was constantly talked up as being "locked in" as the short-yardage back. Far from a special talent, Hughes averaged just 1.9 YPC on 13 totes this preseason after chugging along to 11 yards on seven carries last season. Andre Ellington, rookie David Johnson, and Chris Johnson will handle backfield duties for the Cardinals.
Bills released OLB Quentin Groves.
Groves, 31, was signed last month and was already facing an uphill battle to make the team. The former second-round pick is a special teamer at this stage.
49ers released LB Philip Wheeler.
Oh, how far Wheeler has fallen since signing a five-year, $26 million deal with the Dolphins back in 2013. He's been cut by Miami and San Francisco this year.
