Starling Marte is not in the Pirates' lineup Wednesday.
It appears to just be a day off. Jose Tabata is taking Marte's spot in left field, with Travis Snider covering right.
Welington Castillo is not in the Cubs' lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Yankees.
John Baker will catch Jason Hammel, but Castillo will surely be back out there to catch Travis Wood during the nightcap.
Jay Bruce is not in the Reds' lineup Wednesday.
Bruce is getting a breather against tough left-hander Francisco Liriano. Chris Heisey is starting in his place in right field. Devin Mesoraco is also sitting out, with Brayan Pena getting the start behind the dish.
Bartolo Colon is questionable for his Saturday's scheduled start due to a back issue.
Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News was told by a Mets source that Colon's back "was a factor" in his last outing when was blasted for nine runs on 11 hits over five innings, and "it remains to be seen" if he'll be ready Saturday. Colon has been receiving treatment on his back the past two days and the club will make a determination on his status later this week. They do have an off day Thursday, so Colon could easily be pushed back.
Inclement weather has pushed the beginning of Shane Victorino's (hamstring) rehab assignment at Double-A Portland back to Wednesday or possibly Friday.
Portland's game Tuesday was rained out, and there's evidently more rain in the forecast for Wednesday. The Red Sox have considered sending Victorino to a club with a warmer climate, but they want to make sure sports medicine coordinator Dan Dyrek is able to supervise the outfielder's recovery. Victorino had been slated to return from the DL on Friday, but that could now conceivably be pushed back a bit.
Royals signed RHP Casey Coleman to a minor league contract.
Coleman had been released last week by the Cubs. The 26-year-old has plenty of big league experience but spent all of last season at the Triple-A level, posting a 3.16 ERA over 41 appearances. He's not a bad depth guy to have around.
Rays signed RHP Doug Mathis to a minor league contract.
Mathis had been released by the Rangers last week. The 30-year-old reliever will provide depth at Triple-A Durham.
Coco Crisp flew out as a pinch-hitter in Tuesday's win over the Angels.
Crisp has missed the last two starts with a hamstring issue, but it's a good sign that he felt well enough to pinch-hit. It's possible he'll be back in there Wednesday, though the A's could wait until after Thursday's off day.
