Ryan Madson worked a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's 3-0 shutout of the Mariners.

Madson's results have been a bit inconsistent during the spring, which is to be expected of a player who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2011 due to continuous elbow problems. The veteran reliever won't make the Royals' 25-man roster and can opt out after spring training, but he could head to Triple-A Omaha to serve as depth in the hopes of a mid-season call-up.

Coco Crisp (elbow) could return to game action on Saturday.

The cortisone injection he was given Tuesday for his sore right elbow must have worked, as Crisp unexpectedly did some workouts prior to Thursday's contest and could be back in the lineup Saturday. The A's are moving Crisp to left field this season in hopes of keeping him on the field, but he'll remain a health risk no matter where he plays.

Alex Gordon was hitless in three at-bats Thursday versus the Mariners.

Gordon, who made his spring debut on Saturday, is only 3-for-16 (.188) to start. He had been on the mend from January wrist surgery. Despite the late start and the slow bat, the Royals are counting on him to be ready on Opening Day. Gordon has made the All-Star team in each of the last two seasons.

Jeremy Guthrie held the Mariners scoreless over 5 2/3 innings in Thursday's Cactus League start.

Guthrie outdueled Felix Hernandez, holding the Mariners to just two hits while walking none and striking out two on the afternoon. It was only Guthrie's second start of the spring, but he's expected to be ready to go when the regular season begins.

Felix Hernandez tossed six effective innings, holding the Royals to one run on Thursday.

It was the first time this spring Hernandez had completed even the third inning, let alone six frames. No matter, though, as the Mariners have been carefully managing the right-hander's workload. Hernandez, soon to be 29 years old, has logged 200-plus innings in each of the last seven seasons.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News believes that Nick Martinez leads the competition for the Rangers' No. 5 starter job.

He cautions that "nothing is decided" but thinks that Martinez is the "front runner." Martinez's main competitors for the gig are Nick Tepesch, Anthony Ranaudo and Lisalverto Bonilla. The 24-year-old made 24 starts for Texas last season, posting a 4.55 ERA with just 77 strikeouts over 140 1/3 innings overall.

Derek Holland (shoulder) is expected to start the Rangers' home opener on April 10 versus the Astros.

Holland is over the minor bout of shoulder soreness he dealt with earlier in camp, but the Rangers will play it safe with him and hold him back until the fifth game of the season. "There are two opening days," manager Jeff Banister said. Yovani Gallardo will get the ball on April 6.

Erik Johnson was diagnosed with a moderate abdominal strain.

The initial report stated that Johnson suffered an oblique strain. Either way, he's not expected to be ready for the season and will begin the year in the minors when he does.
