C.J. Anderson will play in Thursday's preseason finale, but Ronnie Hillman will not.

It confirms what we've seen all preseason: An improved Hillman is ahead of Anderson on the depth chart. It's not a priority handcuff situation as the Broncos would turn to a committee if anything happened to Montee Ball.

Seahawks OL coach Tom Cable cited Christine Michael for inconsistency this preseason.

Michael had two fumbles in the preseason and had some lapses in blocking such as forgetting to chip before going out for a pass. Despite unique running ability, he remains behind Robert Turbin on the depth chart. "It's just being able to put a good play together and then a good one the next time and the next time," Cable said. "When that becomes his habit, then he owns it. Right now, he doesn't own it." Michael would have a major role if Marshawn Lynch went down, but he would not be an every-down feature back.

Dolphins K Caleb Sturgis (groin) resumed kicking Tuesday.

Sturgis is in a rush to get back on the field as he tries to hang on to his job. The 2013 fifth-rounder was a disappointment as a rookie, going 26-of-34 (76.4 percent) on field goals. Fantasy owners should be aiming for safer options even if Sturgis gets his groin right.

Quinton Patton ran ahead of Stevie Johnson during the 49ers' third preseason game.

The No. 3 spot behind starters Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin appears to be a fluid situation, with Brandon Lloyd also in the mix. There's even been speculation that Johnson and his $3.65 million salary could be a surprise cut Saturday. Patton, a 2013 fourth-round pick, has one catch for 10 yards through 78 preseason snaps. Johnson has two catches for 11 yards on 36 snaps.

Suspended free agent WR LaVon Brazill has signed with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.

After repeated violations of the league's substance abuse policy, Brazill was suspended for at least all of the 2014 season. The former Colt will stay involved with football and probably hope to catch on with an NFL team in 2015.

A source told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Josh Gordon has "no shot" to have his season-long suspension reduced.

Another source told the Plain Dealer Gordon is pursuing all of his legal options, but a league source familiar with NFL cases like Gordon's stated "he has no shot of having the suspension overturned in court. It's over." It's believed the CBA will "trump any involvement" from the courts. The Plain Dealer suggests Roger Goodell could let Gordon apply for reinstatement shortly after the 2014 season if he's a "model citizen." Of course, Gordon was popped for DUI this summer, which isn't going to help his cause.

The Oakland Tribune suggests rookie Derek Carr could "shorten the leash" of struggling starter Matt Schaub by playing well in the Raiders' preseason finale.

Carr will play well into the second half of Thursday's tilt with Seattle. "I've said it from Day 1, the guy's comfortable in the huddle," OC Greg Olson said of Carr. "The game's not too big for him. I still believe he sees the field very well. I don't think the game's too fast for him, which a lot of times is a concern with a rookie quarterback." We fully expect Carr to make starts, and probably by October.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms the Patriots' acquisition of Tim Wright has nothing to do with Rob Gronkowski's health.

Gronk is a 6-foot-6, 265-pound in-line tight end. Wright is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound college wide receiver. They're completely different players who will play totally different roles. Most signs continue to point to Gronkowski being ready for Week 1, but there are no guarantees. For Gronk drafters, we suggest grabbing Heath Miller or Garrett Graham late as early-season insurance.
