Jake Lamb (hand) returned as a pinch-hitter Thursday against the Brewers.

Lamb went 0-for-2 and even played a couple innings at third base. He should be back in the starting nine for Friday's series opener against the Dodgers. Lamb had missed the team's previous two games with a bruised left hand.

Jaime Garcia will start on short rest Saturday against the Marlins.

He'll be pitching on four days rest instead of his usual five following Tuesday's doubleheader. Manager Mike Matheny considered having Tyler Lyons make a spot start but went with Garcia instead. Jerome Williams will be available in long relief if Matheny has Garcia on a short leash.

Lance Lynn (elbow) has thrown seven live batting practices.

He's hoping to appear in a minor league game by the end of next month. Obviously Lynn hasn't given up on pitching again this season, though we're guessing the Cardinals will play it safe and hold him out until spring training. Lynn is about nine months removed from Tommy John surgery.

Royals recalled RHP Brooks Pounders from Triple-A Omaha.

He'll take the roster spot vacated by Luke Hochevar, who was placed on the disabled list with symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome. Pounders made a pit stop in Kansas City when Wade Davis was hurt earlier this month, logging a 13.50 ERA over three outings. He'll probably be reserved for lower leverage situations.

Royals placed RHP Luke Hochevar on the 15-day disabled list with symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome.

That's never good. Matt Harvey just underwent season-ending surgery to relieve his TOS symptoms and Hochevar could be headed down a similar path. Hochevar is slated to meet with Texas-based Dr. Greg Pearl, who is one of the nation's leading TOS specialists. The right-hander had been the subject of trade rumors but those are probably on hold now that Hochevar is dealing with a potentially serious shoulder issue.

Zach Davies limited the Diamondbacks to three runs -- two earned -- across 6 1/3 frames in Thursday's 6-4 win.

The D'Backs got to Davies with three hits -- including a two-run double by Yasmany Tomas -- and a walk in the first inning, but it was pretty smooth sailing after that. The young right-hander has really established himself well in the Brew Crew's rotation since a rough April, putting up a 2.84 ERA and 75/20 K/BB ratio over 92 innings since the beginning of May. He'll get the Padres at Petco in his next outing.
Jul 28 - 5:29 PM

Jeremy Jeffress recorded his 24th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in Thursday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Jeffress had to go through a 10-pitch battle with Jake Lamb with one out but eventually got him to ground out in a perfect frame. He's been good all year but has really turned it on of late, as the closer has allowed just one earned run over his last 16 appearances. He'll be a sought after commodity leading up to the trade deadline.
Jul 28 - 5:22 PM

Robbie Ray struck out 11 but suffered a loss Thursday against the Brewers, yielding five runs over 5 2/3 innings.

He gave up five hits -- including a two-run homer -- and walked a pair, needing 101 pitches to cover the 5 2/3 frames. Only Jose Fernandez and Max Scherzer have a better K/9 this season than Ray's 11.2 mark, but the southpaw has also put up a 4.70 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Quite the mixed bag. He'll face the Nationals next time out.
