Alex Avila is starting at first base for the Tigers on Saturday in place of the injured Miguel Cabrera.
Avila will bat fifth for the Tigers on Saturday. It isn't quite clear yet how the Tigers plan to manage the first base position in Cabrera's absence. Jefry Marte was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, but they may not want to throw him right in against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Jose Iglesias is not in the Tigers starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.
It's nothing more than a day of rest for the slick-fielding shortstop. Josh Wilson will draw a rare start in his place and bat eighth against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
Tigers purchased the contract of INF Jefry Marte from Triple-A Toledo.
The 24-year-old has played primarily at third base for the Mud Hens this season, though he has appeared in a few contests at first base in the past few seasons. It's unclear exactly how he'll be utilized, but there's a good chance his bat is in the lineup most nights while Miguel Cabrera is sidelined. Marte was slashing .271/.337/.497 with 13 homers and 55 RBI in 77 games at Triple-A.
Tigers placed 1B Miguel Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf.
It's the first time in Cabrera's career that he has been on the disabled list. This is a major blow to the Tigers and to fantasy owners, as the All-Star slugger was hitting an absurd .350/.456/.578 with 15 homers and 54 RBI on the season. The hope is that he will be able to return immediately after the All-Star break. In a corresponding move, Jefry Marte was recalled from Triple-A Toledo.
Angel Pagan is not in the Giants starting lineup for Saturday afternoon's matchup against the Nationals.
The Giants continue to give the outfielder regular rest in order to keep his knees fresh. Gregor Blanco will start in center field and bat leadoff for the Giants against Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals on Saturday, while Ryan Lollis draws his first major league start in left field.
Hisashi Iwakuma (lat) will rejoin the Mariners rotation on Monday against the Tigers.
The right-hander has been sidelined since April 21 due to a strained lat muscle. In three starts with the M's before hitting the disabled list, he registered a 6.61 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 11/3 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings.
Mariners optioned RHP Tom Wilhelmsen to Triple-A Tacoma.
The 31-year-old right-hander has struggled out of the Mariners bullpen this season, posting a 4.68 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 28/11 K/BB mark over 25 innings. He'll look to get back on track in the minor leagues before hopefully rejoining the M's bullpen later in the season.
Mariners optioned LHP Vidal Nuno to Triple-A Tacoma.
The 27-year-old left-hander pitched very well out of the Mariners bullpen, registering a 2.53 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 10/1 K/BB ratio in 10 2/3 innings. It's unclear exactly why he's being sent out though, unless they prefer to stretch him back out as a starter at Triple-A.
