Wilson Betemit (knee) will begin light baseball activities next week.

Betemit, who suffered a right PCL tear during spring training, received clearance after visiting the team doctor in Baltimore. The 31-year-old still has a way to go before returning to game action, but he's finally making some progress.

Mike Puma of the New York Post was told by a high-ranking team official that prospect right-hander Zack Wheeler is expected make 2-3 more starts with Triple-A Las Vegas before joining the Mets.

That would place his major league debut somewhere around June 6 or 11, which would leave the Mets safe from any concerns about eventual Super Two status. Wheeler returned to action Wednesday after a recent collarbone issue and allowed three runs in five innings. The 22-year-old has a 3.99 ERA and 49/20 K/BB ratio in 48 1/3 innings across eight starts this season. He's worth stashing in deeper mixed leagues at this point.

Oswaldo Arcia is not in Thursday's lineup against the Tigers.

This will actually be his fourth straight game on the bench, but the good news is that he's completely healthy. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he's going with Ryan Doumit out of the DH spot Thursday because he's 4-for-10 lifetime against starter Rick Porcello. Arcia is expected to return to the lineup Friday.

Red Sox signed LHP Rafael Perez to a minor league contract.

Perez is still building strength following shoulder surgery, so Ian Browne of MLB.com hears that he will likely report to Double-A Portland and work his way up from there. The 31-year-old southpaw owns a 3.64 ERA over 338 relief appearances in the majors, so he's a worthwhile flier for Boston.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Thursday that Adam Eaton will "probably" get a second opinion on his left elbow from Dr. James Andrews in the coming days.

Eaton was recently pulled off his minor league rehab assignment due to renewed discomfort in his elbow. Towers said an MRI showed fluid around his ulnar collateral ligament, but no new damage was found. As of now, he's expected to rest for 2-3 weeks before restarting his rehab program, but he'll get Andrews' opinion just to be on the safe side.

Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that left-hander Rafael Perez is expected to sign with the Red Sox.

Perez, who had shoulder surgery last September, was released by the Twins last week. He's presumably getting a minor league deal and could be an option for the major league bullpen down the road.

Ivan Nova (triceps) could be activated from the disabled list early next week.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was vague about a possible timeline for Nova when asked Wednesday, but general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday that he is the closest to returning among the team's injured players. However, it isn't clear whether he'll do so as a member of the starting rotation.

Orioles designated RHP Alex Burnett for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Kevin Gausman on the 40-man roster. Burnett made two appearances with the Orioles earlier this month and owns a 1.86 ERA and 8/1 K/BB ratio over 9 2/3 innings in Triple-A. He could draw interest on waivers.
