Phil Hughes is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a bruised right shin.

Hughes was injured when he took an Adam Dunn comebacker in the fourth inning of Thursday's outing versus the White Sox. It doesn't appear that X-rays will be required, so Hughes should have a good shot to make his next start. He struck out four while allowing two runs over three frames before exiting.

J.D. Martinez was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to a minor upper quad injury.

Martinez tweaked his quad on Tuesday and has now sat out two straight contests. He'll be available to pinch-hit Thursday and it sounds like he should rejoin the lineup over the weekend.

Justin Ruggiano hasn't played since Tuesday due to some tightness in his groin.

Ruggiano was feeling better Thursday and has been doing extra exercises with the Cubs' athletic trainers. It sounds like he should avoid a stint on the disabled list. "It's important that we make sure he maintains work with [the trainers]," manager Rick Renteria said.

Jason Vargas (appendectomy) will throw a simulated game on Saturday.

Vargas didn't feel quite right during a bullpen session Wednesday, so the Royals are pumping the brakes on him a bit rather than activating him to start Sunday. He's not expected to need a rehab assignment, so Vargas could conceivably rejoin the rotation sometime next week.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Rangers, Astros, Cubs, Braves, Giants, White Sox, Orioles and Marlins are among the teams that will be at Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo workout on Saturday.

Heyman says there is a "fair amount of excitement over the showcase" for a player he's been told is like "Brett Gardner with power." Castillo, 27, could conceivably be ready to play in the majors during the second half, though it will be a while before we know whether that's a realistic expectation.

Phil Hughes left Thursday's start versus the White Sox after being hit in the right leg by a comebacker.

Adam Dunn's smash appeared to hit Hughes' shin, and he eventually limped off the field with the Twins' trainer. He'll likely go for an X-ray, at which point an update on his status will be available.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that a decision on whether Mark Teixeira (lat) will be placed on the disabled list will likely come Friday.

"It's just seeing how he feels after three or four days," Girardi said. "Then we'll decide if we think it's going to be the near future that he would play or we're going to need the 15-day [disabled list]. If it's going to be 12, 13, 14 days, it probably makes sense to get a player here." Girardi added that it's unlikely Teixeira will play Friday, but "you want to feel that there's progress and that he feels better to start doing some stuff." Teixeira hasn't played since Sunday due to a lower left lat strain.

Ruben Tejada (head) will be back in the Mets' lineup Friday.

Tejada isn't playing Thursday after being hit in the helmet by a pitch Wednesday, but he has no concussion symptoms and the Mets are just being cautious. "Talked to the trainers last night," manager Terry Collins said Thursday. "We thought we’d give him one more day just as a precaution. He feels great. Said he could play, but we’ll just give him today and get him back in there tomorrow."
