J.A. Happ was lifted after giving up seven runs -- six earned -- in 3 1/3 innings Thursday against the Twins.

Happ should be pretty much done as a starter after this. It's just too bad Vidal Nuno can't replace him right now, since he's not stretched out at all. Happ is 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA, and the Mariners have lost 10 of his last 11 starts.

Aaron Hicks went 3-for-4 with a homer and a walk from the two hole Thursday against the Mariners.

The Twins never would have asked for this much from Hicks, but they're getting it. He's had multiple hits in five straight games, raising his average from .259 to .299. If the Twins keeps batting him second, he might even offer some mixed-league value down the stretch.

Austin Jackson homered, doubled and walked versus the Twins on Thursday.

Jackson has been quite the bust offensively in his Mariners career, but at least he's had a bit to offer fantasy leaguers these last two months (.267 average, four homers, five steals) than he did previously. It's just not quite enough to give him mixed-league value.
Jul 31 - 1:12 AM

Jason Castro hit a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Astros topped the Angels 3-0 on Thursday.

Castro was making his first start of the series. The big blast gave him his first RBI since July 3, his first homer since June 12 and his first three-RBI game since last year. Hank Conger probably deserves to keep starting two out of every three games for now, but if Castro does pick it up offensively, it's no secret that the Astros prefer his defense behind the plate.

Scott Kazmir tossed 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball against the Angels on Thursday.

Kazmir ended up allowing just two runs -- one earned -- in 34 innings for the July, though with just two wins, it might not be enough to get him Pitcher of the Month honors. His overall ERA is all of the way down to 2.10.
Jul 31 - 12:53 AM

Carlos Santana blasted his 12th home run of the year Thursday against the Athletics.

He finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBI. Santana's two-run blast off Chris Bassitt in the top of the first inning gave Cleveland a 3-0 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Oakland scratched one across off Carlos Carrasco. For the next eight innings, the teams proceeded to drop zeroes. Santana is riding a modest six-game hit streak and is now slashing .227/.360/.400.
Jul 31 - 12:49 AM

Matt Shoemaker blanked the Astros for seven innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven, in a no-decision Thursday.

Shoemaker was supposed to be bumped from the Angels rotation by now. Instead, he's back looking like a legitimate mixed-league SP with his performance of late. It's going to leave the Angels with a very difficult call to make on Jered Weaver. Their current five would seem to be their best five.
Jul 31 - 12:48 AM

Francisco Lindor went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's win over the A's.

The rookie shortstop had a three-run homer and four RBI in his last game, Wednesday against the Royals. His fireworks weren't as bright tonight, but this was another promising showing by Lindor, who is really heating up. He's hit safely in 15 of his last 18 games to raise his average from .205 to .264. During that stretch, he's gone 25-for-76 (.329) with 11 runs, 13 RBI, four homers and a .358 OBP.
