Lucas Duda (oblique) hopes to be game-ready early next week.

As it turns out, Duda just hit off a tee and took some soft tosses Friday and didn't take batting practice as originally reported. It's nonetheless a nice step as the slugger works his way back from an oblique strain. Duda will have plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day as long as he doesn't have a setback.

Alex Castellanos exited Friday's game versus the Tigers after being hit by a pitch on the right middle finger.

Castellanos immediately crumpled to the ground after being plunked by the Luke Putkonen offering. The non-roster invitee has been sent for X-rays.

Daniel Murphy will undergo X-rays on his right hand.

The Mets announced that Murphy had a bruise after he was removed from Friday's game following a hit by pitch, but apparently that was just a preliminary diagnosis. For what it's worth, Murphy noted that he's not overly concerned even though his hand was noticeably swollen. An update on his status should be available later Friday.

Giants optioned RHP Ray Black to Double-A Richmond; re-assigned RHP Clayton Blackburn and LHP Nik Turley to minor league camp.

That the cuts came so early is a surprise, but none of the three were expected to make the team. Black can hit 100 mph regularly when he's healthy, but he's had a hard time staying on the field. Still, the 24-year-old could debut at some point in 2015 even though he's yet to appear above A-ball.

Yankees signed INF Mat Gamel to a minor league contract.

Gamel hasn't played the last two seasons after back-to-back ACL tears. He's still just 29, but obviously he'll need to show he can stay healthy before being of any use to the Yankees.

Sean Doolittle (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing.

Doolittle remains relegated to strengthening exercises as he rehabs a slight tear in his left rotator cuff. The A's are hoping their closer will be ready at some point in April, but obviously the longer it is until he resumes throwing, the less likely it will be that he's available that soon.

Dodgers signed C Ali Solis to a minor league contract.

Solis agreed to terms with the Dodgers in January but saw the deal fall apart due to a contractual issue. Obviously the two sides worked out whatever that problem was. The 27-year-old will serve as organizational depth.
Mar 6 - 3:00 PM

Royals signed 1B Casey Kotchman to a minor league contract.

Kotchman, 32, sat out last season after going hitless in 20 at-bats for the Marlins in 2013. The veteran first baseman was a starter not that long ago, but he's merely organizational depth at this point.
