Jason Vargas (elbow) will start for the Royals on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Vargas missed around three weeks with a flexor strain in his left elbow. He'll be rushed back without making a rehab start because the Royals need him to cover Danny Duffy's spot. Duffy landed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with inflammation in his left shoulder.

Royals recalled LHP Brandon Finnegan from Triple-A Omaha.

Finnegan had a 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 innings of relief for the Royals when they optioned him to the minors on May 7. He's presumably going to return to a long relief role, though he had made three starts on the farm.

Royals placed LHP Danny Duffy on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation.

Duffy reported feeling discomfort in his left shoulder last week and he's been rocked in his last few starts, so the Royals will give him some extended rest. Jason Vargas will be activated to start in his place Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium and Brandon Finnegan will join the Royals from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.

Austin Jackson (ankle) went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his eighth rehab game Sunday with Triple-A Tacoma.

And he went 3-for-5 with a walk on Saturday. Jackson should return from the disabled list early this week, perhaps as soon as Monday. The 28-year-old center fielder has been out since May 3 with a right ankle sprain.

Mets manager Terry Collins suggested Sunday that Matt Harvey may be going through a period of "dead arm."

Harvey had the worst outing of his career Saturday in the Mets' loss to the Pirates, yielding seven earned runs in four innings. But he was dominant against the Cardinals in his start before and the "dead arm" thing is really just speculation from Collins anyway. "I have not talked to Matt yet, but it looks like he might be going through some of that dead arm stuff that sometimes happens," said the Mets' skipper. "He’s going to pitch Friday with five days rest, be ready to go."

Jameson Taillon (elbow) pitched two innings of an extended spring training game Saturday in Florida.

Pirates GM Neal Huntington said the ball was coming out of Taillon's hand "free and easy." The 23-year-old right-hander is being eased along in his rehabilitation from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery but could feasibly become an option for the Pirates' rotation sometime in the second half. He's only a couple weeks away from pitching in live, meaningful minor league games.

Hanley Ramirez (hand) went 1-for-4 with a run scored Sunday as the Red Sox defeated the Angels.

Hanley had to be removed from Friday's loss to the Angels after taking a pitch off his left hand, but he went 2-for-4 in Saturday's win and also played a role Sunday. The 31-year-old left fielder is hitting .263/.313/.480 with 10 home runs, 22 RBI, and 24 runs scored through his first 40 games with Boston.

Josh Fields (knee) tossed a scoreless inning in the Astros' win over the Tigers on Sunday.

Fields struck out two of the four batters he faced. He was shut down for a bit after taking a comebacker off the outside of his right knee last Thursday. It was no big deal. Fields, 29, boasts a 0.87 ERA and 18/3 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 innings this season for Houston.
