Mike Leake was lifted after allowing four runs in five innings Wednesday against the Phillies.

Leake had a very good spring, but he's opened the regular season by giving up four or five runs in six straight outings. We wouldn't go dropping him in mixed leagues -- he's just in such a good situation in St. Louis -- but it'd be great to see some improvement from him next time out against the Angels.

Adam Morgan yielded three runs in four-plus innings Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Morgan made it look pretty easy for four innings, allowing just two hits. Then the fifth started and he failed to retire any of the five hitters he faced before being yanked, giving up four hits and a walk. Fortunately, Colton Murray came in and stranded both baserunners he inherited, protecting Morgan's ERA from further damage. Still, he's at 6.00 in two starts since his callup.

Andrew Bailey tossed a scoreless seventh inning on Wednesday and has allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings since his callup.

Hector Neris is probably first in line to become the Phillies' closer if the team makes a change, but Bailey has also presented himself as an alternative. In truth, the Phillies should have just saved themselves some trouble in the first week of the season by making Bailey the closer at the end of spring training.
May 4 - 11:42 PM

Jeanmar Gomez took his first blown save and loss after giving up two runs in the ninth Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Gomez retired just one of the six hitters he faced, with one of his two outs coming on a play at the plate. Gomez has done excellent work as the Phillies' closer, but the team would be better off if Hector Neris or Andrew Bailey could secure the job, allowing Gomez to return to his old stomping grounds in the middle innings. It might happen before too long.

Ryan Howard delivered a three-run homer against the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Howard is just 17-for-87 on the season, giving him a .195 average, but seven of his 17 hits have left the yard. He's probably due more playing time against lefties since Darin Ruf has struggled as his platoon partner.
May 4 - 11:37 PM

Rule 5 pick Tyler Goeddel went 0-for-3 Wednesday in his first start since April 27.

It looked like Goeddel would have a big role in the Philadelphia outfield when the season opened, but a 1-for-16 start changed that and now he's made three starts in two weeks. It looks like he'll stay buried for a while.
May 4 - 11:35 PM

David Ortiz had a two-run homer and an RBI single in the Red Sox's 5-2 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

Ortiz's 1.037 OPS ranks second in the American League, trailing only Manny Machado at 1.083. The rest of the AL is going to be awfully happy to see him retire if he keeps this up.
May 4 - 11:32 PM

Clay Buchholz held the White Sox to two runs and three hits in seven innings Wednesday to pick up his first win.

This was being termed a big start for Buchholz after he came in 0-3 with a 6.51 ERA. It wasn't really -- his rotation spot wasn't in any jeopardy -- but he and the Red Sox are surely happy that he turned in his first really positive effort of the year. He struck out six and walked two on the night. Buchholz should be a pretty good play in mixed leagues next week with home starts against the A's and Astros.
