Pirates general manager Neil Huntington confirmed Thursday that Mark Melancon will remain the team's closer.
The acquisition of Joakim Soria on Thursday strengthened an already deep and talented setup corps for the Bucs, but it won't force the All-Star right-hander from his ninth-inning gig. Melancon boasts a stellar 1.32 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and league leading 32 saves on the year.
Mets activated C Travis d'Arnaud from the 15-day disabled list.
Manager Terry Collins indicated Thursday that the club will ease the hard-hitting backstop back into action, so expect to see him share the load with Kevin Plawecki for awhile until he gets back into the swing of things.
Dodgers designated OF Chris Heisey for assignment.
Like Brandon Beachy, Heisey became a roster casualty due to the massive three-team trade with the Marlins and Braves. While the 30-year-old outfielder struggled in his limited action with the big league club this year, he should attract interest on waivers and could be flipped elsewhere.
Dodgers designated RHP Chin-Hui Tsao for assignment.
The 34-year-old hurler appeared in just five games for the big league club, registering a 10.29 ERA, 2.57 WHIP and 7/3 K/BB ratio over seven innings. There's a good chance that he passes through waivers unclaimed and continues to provide organizational bullpen depth in the minor leagues.
Dodgers designated RHP Brandon Beachy for assignment.
The Dodgers were forced to cut a few very talented players as a result of Thursday's massive 13-player three-team trade. Beachy should attract interest from several clubs, and the Dodgers could flip him in another trade shortly.
Astros acquired OF Carlos Gomez and RHP Mike Fiers from the Brewers for OF Domingo Santana, OF Brett Phillips, LHP Josh Hader, RHP Adrian Houser and international bonus slot #76.
The dynamic 29-year-old outfielder was nearly traded to the Mets on Wednesday evening before the deal fell apart due to financial issues. Their loss, is a huge gain for the Astros though who will add another monster bat to an already dangerous lineup. In 74 games with the Brewers this season, Gomez was hitting .262/.328/.423 with eight homers, 43 RBI and seven stolen bases.
Astros acquired RHP Mike Fiers and OF Carlos Gomez from the Brewers for OF Domingo Santana, OF Brett Phillips, LHP Josh Hader, RHP Adrian Houser and international bonus slot #76.
The Astros now boast a very strong top four hurlers in their rotation, as Fiers likely slots in behind Dallas Keuchel, Scott Kazmir and Lance McCullers. The 30-year-old right-hander boasts a 3.89 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 121/43 K/BB ratio through 118 frames on the year and should benefit from a move away from the launching pad that is Miller Park.
Brewers acquired RHP Adrian Houser, OF Domingo Santana, OF Brett Phillips, LHP Josh Hader and international bonus slot #76 from the Astros for OF Carlos Gomez and RHP Mike Fiers.
While the 22-year-old hurler doesn't have the cache of the other three prospects heading to the Brewers in this deal, he isn't simply a throw-in either. He has a live arm and the ability to pitch out of the bullpen or rotation. In 19 appearances between /High-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi this season, he owns a 5.10 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 78/35 K/BB ratio across 83 frames.
