Bartolo Colon pitched seven innings of one-run ball and struck out eight to defeat the Cardinals on Thursday.

Colon drew the reeling Cardinals at a good time, and he turned in his high-strikeout game as a Met. He has a 26/3 K/BB ratio in 32 innings for the season, but since he has given up six homers, his ERA stands at 4.50.

Doug Fister (lat) is scheduled to make his first minor league rehab start Sunday with High-A Potomac.

Fister, out since spring training with a lat strain, threw a bullpen session Thursday with no issues. He's expected to toss four innings in his first rehab outing and will likely need at least one more start before joining Washington's rotation. If all goes well, he should be activated around May 7.

With Kyle Farnsworth getting the day off, Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched a perfect ninth for his first major league save on Thursday.

Matsuzaka had no problem maintaining the Mets' three-run lead in the ninth. It was his second ever save, the first coming back in Japan in 2000. He's allowed one run and two hits in 5 1/3 innings since his callup last week.

Ivan Nova will undergo Tommy John surgery next Tuesday.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews. It was considered inevitable after Nova was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, but he wanted to get a second opinion before going ahead with the procedure. He'll now be sidelined until the early part of 2015. Vidal Nuno will take his place in the starting rotation for now.

Lance Lynn took his first ever loss in April after allowing three runs -- two earned -- in 6 1/3 innings Thursday against the Mets.

The Cardinals' offensive malaise finally got to Lynn, who had been 4-0 with a 3.42 ERA this season and 12-0 lifetime in 13 April starts. Lynn struck out nine, so it was hardly a bad day for him. However, he was responsible for the unearned run, as he committed a throwing error to start the sixth. Oddly enough, he also took advantage of a Bartolo Colon error to reach base in the fifth.

Yankees optioned RHP Preston Claiborne to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Claiborne threw 32 pitches in relief of Michael Pineda on Wednesday night, so it's no surprise to see him head back to the minors. He should be back at some point soon.
Apr 24 - 4:26 PM

Daniel Murphy went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk Thursday versus the Cardinals.

Murphy's eighth multihit game of the season raised his average to .291. However, he's still looking for his first homer after 86 at-bats. Last year, he had 13 homers in 658 at-bats for the Mets.

Yankees optioned INF Dean Anna to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Anna was sent out in order for the Yankees to add some bullpen depth. The 27-year-old made the Opening Day roster and hit .136 (3-for-22) with one home run and one double in 12 games.
