Joe Musgrove fired seven scoreless frames in a 2-0 victory over the Orioles on Friday.

It was easily his best start of the season. Musgrove held the Orioles to just four hits while walking none and striking out six. He gave up seven runs in his last start and issued three walks in three out of his last four starts, making his rotation spot vulnerable, but this outing likely buys him some more time.

Kevin Gausman yielded two runs over 6 2/3 innings in a loss to the Astros on Friday.

Gausman gave up solo shots to Jake Marisnick and Carlos Beltran. It was a strong outing on the whole, as he struck out a pair and walked none, but it was enough to put him on the losing side. Gausman still owns an ugly 6.17 ERA on the year, but he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three out of his last four starts. He’s moving in the right direction, at least.

Ken Giles tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the Orioles on Friday for his 14th save of the season.

Giles needed just nine pitches to complete the frame and notched one strikeout along the way. The hard-throwing right-hander has converted each of his last seven save chances and hasn’t allowed a run in his last six appearances.

Jake Marisnick slugged a solo home run Friday against the Orioles.

Marisnick went deep in the third inning before Carlos Beltran added some insurance with a solo blast of his own in the sixth. The 26-year-old has been very productive in a small sample this season, batting .290/.362/.597 with six home runs and four steals through 35 games. He’s a useful player to have around, but it’s worth noting that he has struck out 26 times in 69 plate appearances. We don’t expect this sort of production to last.

Carlos Beltran launched a solo homer against the Orioles on Friday.

Jake Marisnick got the Astros on the board in the third inning with a solo shot before Beltran went deep in the sixth. With Joe Musgrove rolling, it was more than enough support for the Astros to walk away with the victory. The 40-year-old Beltran has been very quiet so far this season, batting just .235 with five home runs and a .666 OPS through 43 games. He’s now sitting on 426 home runs for his career, which ties him with Billy Williams for 50th on the all-time list.

Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in Friday’s loss to the Astros.

Both doubles came off Joe Musgrove, but the Orioles were unable to cash in on either opportunity. Machado has at least delivered counting stats for fantasy owners with 10 home runs, 25 RBI, and 22 runs scored through 45 games, but he’s batting just .225/.312/.444 on the year. His contact rate has been down so far, but we’re still expecting big things. There might still be time to buy here.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said after Friday's game that Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki would not be in Saturday's lineup.

While both were activated from the disabled list and played in Friday's game, it sounds like the Jays will take it easy on them for awhile and ease them into a full workload. Donaldson went 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of strikeouts in his return on Friday.

Astros optioned RHP Jordan Jankowski to Triple-A Fresno.

The 28-year-old hurler appeared in just one game in his limited time with the big league club, allowing two runs and striking out three in an inning of work. He should get another opportunity with the Astros later in the season.
