ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini reports the Redskins have named Kirk Cousins as their Week 1 starter.

Aug 31 - 9:20 AM

Lions acquired TE Tim Wright from the Buccaneers.

Wright's odyssey continues. After a breakout rookie campaign in Tampa, Wright was acquired by the Patriots last offseason. He struggled to make an impact in New England and was waived in June. The Bucs claimed Wright off waivers but have now traded him for the second time in two years. In Detriot, Wright will compete with Joseph Fauria for snaps behind Eric Ebron and Brandon Pettigrew.

Lions cut WR Ryan Broyles.

Broyles reportedly asked for his release after not getting many looks this preseason. A 2012 second-round pick out of Oklahoma, Broyles has had his career derailed by two ACL surgeries and a torn Achilles. Those injuries have taken their toll on Broyles, who reportedly lacked explosiveness this offseason. He may get a look from someone, but it appears his career is nearing the end.

Colts released OG Donald Thomas.

Thomas has appeared in just two games since 2013 and sat out OTAs and much of training camp with a quad injury. He was just activated off the active/PUP list last week. Thomas looked to be an ascending player before the injuries, so he will certainly latch on with another team.

The Florida Times-Union said it is "starting to look unrealistic" for Sen'Derrick Marks (ACL) to play Week 1.

Coach Gus Bradley refused to rule Marks out, but it appears likely Marks misses at least the first couple weeks of the season. Marks will be a little over nine months removed from tearing his ACL when the season begins.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera confirmed Kony Ealy is the starting right defensive end.

The Panthers have been searching for a bookend for Charles Johnson since placing Greg Hardy on the commissioner's exempt list Week 2 of last season. A 2014 second-rounder, Ealy struggled with consistency as a rookie but still managed four sacks on limited snaps. He should have a much bigger role this time around.
Aug 31 - 8:43 AM

ESPN Giants reporter Dan Graziano said rookie DE Owa Odighizuwa "could be a key contributor" early in his career.

With Jason Pierre-Paul sidelined indefinitely, the Giants do not have much pass-rushing pop on their defensive line. An explosive athlete who posted a 39-inch vertical at 6'4, 267 pounds, Owa has the physical upside to be a force as a pass rusher. He should open the season with a big role in the defensive end rotation.

The Bengals' official website said it is "unclear" if RE Michael Johnson (knee) will be ready for Week 1.

Johnson suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in early August. He returned to conditioning drills last week, but he has yet to resume practicing. If he can find the practice field this week, he should be good to go.
