Dolphins coach Joe Philbin suggested Lamar Miller remains ahead Knowshon Moreno for the starting running back job.

"I like everything Lamar has done since he's gotten here," Philbin said. "He's had an excellent offseason and camp. I like everything he's done since April 21." Miller has been splitting first-team reps this week, but is expected to open the season as Miami's primary early-down back. Moreno is the favorite for third down and pass protection snaps.

The Dolphins are "strongly considering" not putting Mike Pouncey (hip) on the reserve/PUP list with the hope he can play in late September.

Pouncey is targeting Week 4 for his return. The Dolphins are "encouraged by his progress," but have yet to make a decision on his status. By not placing Pouncey on PUP, he would be allowed to practice with the team and not have to miss the first six games. The Dolphins would be taking a risk by using a roster spot on him. Pouncey is two months removed from hip surgery.

Browns coach Mike Pettine was noncommittal on Nate Burleson's roster status after he returned to workouts Monday.

"I can't speak on whether guys have a certain spot or not," Pettine said. "It does hurt your chances not being out there. It's something where we'll consider his entire body of work." Burleson has been sidelined for the majority of camp with a hamstring injury and missed Cleveland's first three preseason games. He returned to practice this week, and expects to play in the exhibition finale. It's hard to see the Browns not keeping Burleson despite the missed time. Anthony Armstrong was released Monday, which should increase his roster chances.

The Titans met with agent Drew Rosenhaus Tuesday to continue discussions about a contract extension for DT Jurrell Casey.

The sides have been working on an extension for months and could be close to finalizing a deal. Casey had 90 tackles and 10.5 sacks last season, grading out as a top-five defensive tackle by Pro Football Focus. He's owed $1.431 million in the final year of his rookie deal.

The Ravens have expressed interest in free agent CB Derek Cox.

Cox, 27, was released from the Vikings on Monday. In Baltimore, he would provide depth behind injured starters Jimmy Smith and Lardarius Webb. The Ravens currently have just four healthy corners on their roster.

ESPN New York doesn't expect Mario Manningham to make the Giants' 53-man roster.

Manningham survived the first-round of cuts, but his roster spot remains tenuous. Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle and Odell Beckham are locked in as the Giants' top three receivers, with Jerrel Jernigan and UDFA Corey Washington strong bets to make the team. Manningham has just two catches for 22 yards this preseason. He's on the outside looking in.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he plans to keep Joe Webb as the team's No. 3 quarterback.

The Panthers only kept two quarterbacks last year, but can't afford to cut Webb with Cam Newton (ribs) injured. Webb has completed 21-of-35 passes for 271 yards with two touchdowns and one interception through three preseason games, adding 30 yards on four carries. Derek Anderson will open the season as Newton's backup. Webb's roster spot won't be guaranteed once Newton returns.

Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount will "absolutely" play in Thursday's preseason finale against the Panthers.

It's part of their "punishment" for last week's arrest. Punishing football players by making them play football. Imagine that? We'd be shocked if Bell and Blount played more than a series or two. Despite the Steelers' desire to "punish" their top two backs, they do not want to risk their health for Week 1.
