Jonathan Grimes rushed three times for 14 yards in the Texans' third preseason game.

Grimes was the second Texans tailback through the rotation, playing behind Alfred Blue and ahead of both Chris Polk and Kenny Hilliard. Grimes played briefly with both the Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett groups before exiting so the Texans could get longer looks at Polk and Hilliard. Through three preseason games, Grimes has 13 carries for 41 yards and three catches for 22 yards.

Vikings waived RB Joe Banyard.

An undrafted free agent in 2012, Banyard is a talented runner but has spent most of his career on Minnesota's practice squad. He did get offensive snaps in nine games last season, gaining 88 yards on 21 carries (4.2 YPC). Banyard should latch on with another team.

Vikings released TE Brandon Bostick.

The Vikings are going with Kyle Rudolph, MyCole Pruitt, and Chase Dixon instead. Bostick was claimed off waivers from the division-rival Packers all the way back in February. He failed to make it even to final cuts in Minnesota.

Cecil Shorts caught one pass for 12 yards in the Texans' third preseason game.

Shorts continued to run with the ones along with DeAndre Hopkins, breaking a tackle and picking up a first down on Houston's first drive. Through three exhibition games, Shorts has two catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. The fact that the oft-injured Shorts has remained healthy throughout training camp bodes particularly well. Shorts is a PPR sleeper in deeper leagues.

Josh Hill caught one pass for five yards in the Saints' third preseason game.

Playing behind Ben Watson but still working with the ones, Hill was targeted on an end-zone pass at the end of the Saints' opening drive, but the ball was thrown widely by Drew Brees. Hill continues to have all the appearances of a sub-package tight end and red-zone weapon, while Watson operates as New Orleans' every-down tight end. Through three preseason games, Hill has six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Marques Colston went catch-less in the Saints' third preseason game.

Colston didn't play on the Saints' first snap of the game, but entered on the second play from scrimmage, manning slot receiver with Brandin Cooks and Brandon Coleman outside. Colston was targeted on a red-zone pass in the first quarter, but Drew Brees' throw was broken up by Texans ILB Brian Cushing. Colston may no longer technically be a starter, which is something of a concern for his playing time. Now 32 years old, Colston is not a great bet to improve significantly on last year's 59-902-5 receiving line.
Aug 30 - 6:37 PM

Brandon Coleman caught one pass for 27 yards in the Saints' third preseason game.

Coleman ran with the Saints' first-team offense in two-wide sets, playing ahead of Marques Colston, who entered for three-wide packages at slot receiver. Coleman's lowlight was a drop on a pass from Luke McCown. His highlight was a 27-yard second-quarter gain on a deep crosser. Coleman is a legitimate threat to Colston's playing time, but his snap share remains somewhat unclear, and Coleman's lack of preseason production is a slight concern. He has one catch on four targets through three exhibition games.

Ryan Mallett completed 9-of-17 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' third preseason game.

Brian Hoyer played just about a quarter, giving Mallett lots of run in the first half and into the third quarter. The offense largely sputtered after Hoyer left, but Mallett did throw a rocket for a would-be 15-yard touchdown to TE Ryan Griffin, only for Griffin to bobble the ball on the way down and have the score negated. Mallett finally got the offense moving on a third-quarter drive against the Saints' reserve defense, hitting Jaelen Strong for a six-yard score. Mallett is very clearly the backup to Hoyer in Houston and didn't even make it a race this preseason.
