Dan Haren was pulled in the fifth inning after giving up seven runs and two walks on nine hits Sunday in a loss to the Padres.

Haren suffered an ankle injury during his last start and may not be completely healthy. He allowed three runs in the first inning and was victimized by a pair of home runs to Will Venable and Kyle Blanks. Haren is in position to bounce back with a matchup against the Phillies next week.

Nate Karns allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings and had six strikeouts in his start Friday at Double-A Harrisburg.

Karns didn't make it out of the first inning in his previous outing, so it was a much needed return to form. If Ross Detwiler (back) requires an extended absence, Karns could find his way into the Nationals' plans. He has a 4.38 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 39 innings (eight starts) at the Double-A level this season.

Luis Mendoza allowed just two runs on eight hits over six innings in his start Sunday against the Athletics.

Mendoza earned his first win earlier this week, and has put together three straight quality starts. He would have been in line for his second win, but the Royals' bullpen gave up a home run to Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth inning that cost him the game. Mendoza has a 5.50 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) this season.

Ryan Cook earned his first save of the season on Sunday against the Royals.

With both Grant Balfour and Sean Doolittle unavailable, Cook came out to close the ninth inning. Balfour has converted his last 26 saves, so he isn't in danger of losing his job.

A.J. Griffin gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings Sunday against the Royals.

It was another solid outing from Griffin, who has allowed just seven earned runs combined in his past four starts. He had three walks, five strikeouts, and was removed after the sixth inning with 105 pitches. Griffin didn't factor in the decision, but continues to pitch well this season. He has a plus matchup with the Astros on Saturday.
May 19 - 7:43 PM

Jason Vargas threw seven scoreless innings in Sunday's win over the White Sox.

After a rough outing against the Astros, Vargas has went at least seven innings in his last two games and has back-to-back quality starts. He gave up just four hits with three walks and finished with six strikeouts. Vargas now has a 3.55 ERA through his first nine starts this season.
May 19 - 7:10 PM

Howie Kendrick went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Sunday's game against the White Sox.

Kendrick hasn't had many RBI opportunities batting in the sixth spot for the Angels, but he surprisingly managed six home runs this season. The 29-year-old second baseman is batting .370 (10-for-27) with a home run and two doubles over his last seven games.
May 19 - 7:06 PM

Jake Peavy was charged with four earned runs on four hits over six innings in a loss Sunday against the Angels.

Peavy struggled with his control (five walks), but allowed just four hits and had seven strikeouts. After giving up consecutive two run innings, he retired the last seven batters he faced. It ends a streak of five-straight games in which Peavy had surrendered two or fewer runs. Peavy shouldn't have any trouble getting back on track in his next start Saturday vs. the Marlins.
